Okay, all the time I see people on here talking about having Uppers in different calibers for their EBR's.

So, does a different Upper just let you shoot a different caliber with the same lower half? If so, are they sold as guns themselves? And, do you have to buy different magazine for all the diffrent calibers?

Finally, do they only work with a certain brand? I mean do I have to buy an actual Armalite AR-15, or can I buy a cheaper Bushmaster, and still swap out the Uppers?

I am only an egg, trying to grok.

Yes. For example, an Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf upper will work on any standard AR lower.

No. Only the stripped lower counts as a firearm. You can buy uppers with very little hassle.

And, do you have to buy different magazine for all the diffrent calibers?

Depends. Some calibers will work in standard M16 mags, often with a bit of tweaking. Other calibers rely on different mags. They are all designed to fit in the AR mag well (though sometimes with an adapter), however.

Finally, do they only work with a certain brand?

As long as the lowers are standard, any upper will work.
