I currently carry a glock 19 and sometimes a keltec p11. I want to change it up a little a get a carry gun in a different caliber.

I am wanting a subcompact glock, and have had my eye on the 29 in 10mm. Then through my random internet searching have came across a few articles about it not being near the power house it is claimed to be when shot out of the short barrel subcompacts. (I cant give you references because this has been about a 3 day off and on search) It looked almost like the 40 was real close in performance when you get to the sc guns, and you can get it even smaller than the subcompact 10mm.

Then I thought about 357 sig, and kinda got the same results here and there.

What do you guys think? What is the best performer in a subcompact?

Lets assume ammo price/availability is a non issue.

Whats nice about most .40 cals is that you can get a conversion barrel to turn it into a .357 sig if you wanted to.

So I'd recommend a .40 with a 357 sig conversion barrel. 2 guns in one. :)

Between a 357 sig and a 10mm Id go with the 357.

Move up on to the .45 ACP, makes a bigger hole. There are a bunch of brands, action styles, material types, etc. You will find a huge selection of 1911's and a 4" 1911 is basically the same size as your Glock 19 and is a little thinner for IWB carry.

Just putting 800 FMJ rounds through it to ensure the pistol really is reliable and won't have any problems (most recommend 1,000 rounds) - about $400 for .357 SIG or 10mm

Add another $90+ to test function with your chosen HP round and have two mags loaded with it ready for carry.

Put that $490+ on top of the price of whatever handgun you are looking at purchasing.

If you would put just half of that money towards training and ammunition with the 19 you'd be much better off.

I was looking at .357 Sig awhile back. I could buy 500 rounds of Gold Dot for $249. I could buy 500 rounds of 9mm Gold Dot for $239. Hardly a deal breaker, in fact pretty attractive. The problem was I could not find reasonably priced practice ammo for it, in fact it was really hard to just find .357 Sig practice ammo period. It was a deal breaker for me. Now some people say drop another barrel in there and practice with 9mm or .40 a good idea but in reality the sights don't translate that well. POI moves from .40 to .357 from what I have read.

This is true but...

My name is Derek Hazlett and I am an addict.

I need to feed my addiction and purchase another gun soon or it will get all "The Shining" like around here.

Honestly I don't believe there is a enough of a difference between a 9mm and any of the rounds mentioned to make it worth the switch from that perspective for a carry gun. If you just want to get a new gun then that is a different matter.

The G27 would allow you, with the appropriate barrels, to run 357 sig, 40 S&W and 9mm.

The G29 would allow for use of 357 sig, 40 S&W, and 9x25 again with the appropriate barrel.

As to ballistics with the shorter barrel of the G29, I have done no measurements with my own chronograph but double taps website lists about 50-70 FPS lower coming out the 29 than the 20 for their various loads.

The heaviest and deepest penetrating 10mm in existence!

I'd get the 29 since it would allow for 40 and 357 sig and you already have a 9mm. Also the 10mm is the round for which there is the best argument that you are really gaining much over the 9mm. I've been wanting a 10mm for a while though so I'm inclined to pick it.

I would try a G29 if possible before you buy. The G20 with full power loads is a manageable handfull, I can only imagine how a 10mm subcompact must be to shoot.

Here is my changeup pitch. S&W M&P 40c. Night Sights. Apex sear kit if so inclined.
Conventional 10+1 magazines in flush or extended mag versions standard.....or FS magazines 15 rounds .40 cal or .357 sig. with X-Mag adapter. You could even do Storm Lake barrel swap to a 9MM and 17 round magazines.
Pretty versatile rig with 3 caliber capability and carry configuration.

Honestly, the recoil is a non-issue. Feels the same as my Glock 23 (.40 S&W) unless I'm shooting some heavy Double Tap or Buffalo Bore loads. Then, you can tell the difference. However, it is still not even approaching the low end of the "unmanageable" scale...

The 10mm is a very versatile cartridge. Just a simple mag change to swap from 2-legged to 4-legged critter defense. Or, shoot the .40S&W if you want to plink on the cheap. (I have the Lone Wolf .40S&W conversion barrel)
