Lost my 5 year old nephew in hunting accident

Hello everybody

last week Tuesday my nephew was hunting with his grandpa.
apparently he tripped and fell on the 22lr rifle he was hunting with and shot himself in the chest,

please don't let little kids carry guns

he was only 5

I look at my 4 1/2 year old and I don't think he'll mature enough at 5 to convince me to put a loaded gun in his hands.
 
I'm sorry Pulsar.

Agreed - 5 year olds should not be carrying loaded guns, even if their dads or granddads did when they were that age.
 
Very sad, Pulsar. I searched Zia Pueblo's news articles for the past 2 weeks and couldn't find mention of the tragedy. If you'd post a link to the story, I'm sure that many of our members would like to donate to a memorial fund or send personal condolences to the family...

since it being on the Zia Rez im not sure there are any new clips

im not sure how the news gets there storys
but im sure no one called them
i dont know if BIA has anything on it

i dont have no way of proving it
his mass is tomorrow at 8am in zia
call the mission in jemez if you want proof

all i wanted was for people to second think giving little kids guns
thats all
 
We all like to believe that everybody thinks twice before handing a small child any sort of firearm that isn't under direct, constant hands-on supervision. Unfortunately, some people don't. These are the ones who give us all a bad name and set the stage for tragedy like this.

We'd really like to send condolences...from THR...to the family. If we can't do it directly, maybe you can have them access the thread online.
 
I'm not sure how a 5 year old falls on rifle and shoots himself in the chest. Can a 5 year old reach the trigger with the muzzle against his chest?

After 8 years on gun discussion forums I must confess to being suspicious of a new poster whose message is anti-gun.

Sorry if this sounds harsh or not compassionate, but I've seen this sort of thing before. I've seen anti-gun activists post such messages and one guy's first post was a description of being shot as he killed an armed robber and a few weeks later he faked his own death.
 
While I understand perfectly the need for vigilence against trolling, by the Bradys or anyone, I think we can stay on the High Road. A couple posts here have come across as being rude, and I don't think that's necessary. Pulsar has done more lurking than posting in the 3 1/2 years he's been a member, but a quick look at his previous posts show him to be an unlikely troll.

My condolences to you and your family.

It is important to remember that guns, like any other tool, require care and knowledge when used. Much in the same way that you wouldn't let a 5 year old play with a soldering iron or a nail gun, don't let them play with firearms(loaded or not).
 
My son is 4 1/2 and I just hate hearing things like this. Before I was a father, I never would have had such a reaction to story like this. This is truly tragic, and I'm sure the grandfather just feels horrible.

I'm so sorry for your familys' loss.
 
Pulsar if this actually happened, I want to see all doubt removed so we can give genuine and united condolences as well as learn from this. Surely there was an obituary. All obituaries are online now as well so finding it in the newspaper's website and posting a link is not difficult. Frankly I have a hard time believing that this happened. It's all but physically impossible to trip and shoot yourself in the chest with a rifle. If it DID happen, then God really REALLY wanted this boy back with him.

This clearly is veering off the High Road.

The fundamental premise (that safety is important, and that kids need proper supervision) is accepted and endorsed.

The event itself, as described, requires some explanation.

The lack of verifiable confirmation will lead some members to assert that the event is false.
