Lt. Gen. Russel Honore - Commander of the relief effort in New Orleans takes charge.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin calls Lt. Gen. Russel Honore a "John Wayne dude" who can "get some stuff done." "He came off the doggone chopper, and he started cussing and people started moving," Nagin said in an interview Thursday night with a local radio station, where he demands feds 'get off their asses'.

The three-star general directed the deployment of an estimated 1,000 National Guard troops from a New Orleans street corner Friday, making it clear that it was a humanitarian relief operation.

"Getting food and water to the people at the city's convention center was a difficult process", Honore said.

"If you ever have 20,000 people come to supper, you know what I'm talking about. If it's easy, it would have been done already."

“This is a disaster,” says Lt. Gen. Russel Honore. “This isn't something somebody can control. We ain't stuck on stupid.”

Honore recognizes that storm victims have waited days for relief, and his troops are trying to get them out of the city and into a more comfortable environment.

"Our number one task is to deal with the concentration of people in New Orleans, as well as those that are isolated. And we're going to get after it," he said.

The general acknowledged that frustration, and in some cases lawlessness, is building. "By-and-large, these are families that are just waiting to get out of here. They are frustrated; I would be, too. I get frustrated at the cash register counter when the paper runs out."

Hundreds of National Guard and active duty troops are carrying weapons in the city. But the way they carried those guns was a concern to the general.
He ordered all he encountered to point their weapons down, said CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr, who was with the general. Honore repeatedly went up to military vehicles, National Guardsmen standing sentry and even to New Orleans police officers, telling them to please point their weapons down and reminding them that they were not in Iraq. Honore commands the 1st Army, based at Fort Gillem in Forest Park, Georgia, outside Atlanta.

The general is a native of Lakeland, Louisiana, which is northwest of Baton Rouge. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational agriculture from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge in 1971. Honore was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the infantry upon graduation. He also has a master's degree in human resources from Troy State University.
He has served in a number of infantry command positions and at the Pentagon. Before taking command of the 1st Army, Honore commanded the Standing Joint Force Headquarters-Homeland Security, U.S. Northern Command.

Honore's daughter and other relatives live in New Orleans, but he has not seen them since he arrived in town.

"The priority is on this mission, getting these people out of here," he said.

The general came to rescue of one young mother trying to carry her twin babies down the street in the terrible heat and humidity of New Orleans, Starr reported. The mother was so exhausted the children were almost falling out of her arms. The general went up to the woman and took both of her babies, handing them off to soldiers to carry, as he promised the mother that they were going to get her some help. The troops helped the three hurricane victims to a Coast Guard ship, where they were treated for exhaustion and dehydration.

Honore said he wants his troops' profile in New Orleans to be that of humanitarian relief operations, leaving the law enforcement role to the local police.

Lieutenant General Russel Honore lived up to his 'John Wayne dude' nickname, blasting complaints that red tape or poor security were snarling relief efforts as "B.S."

The fiery general, in charge of the military component of the mission, lost his rage during a press conference after President George W. Bush's visit to rescue coordinators here.

"That's B.S. It's B.S.," Honore raged.

"I can tell you that is B.S. We have got 300 helicopters and some of the finest EMS workers in the world down there.

"There is no red tape ... there are isolated incidents that people take to paint a broad brush."

Honore also lashed out at questions from journalists at the Baton Rouge emergency operations center concerning the security situation in New Orleans.

"You need to get on the streets of New Orleans, you can't sit back here and say what you hear from someone else."

"It is secure, we walk around without any issues. Why the hell are you trying to make that the issue, if you can help, get there and help," he said, saying that people were being scared away by reports of violence.

When one reporter argued that there still reports of bureaucracy and unrest stalling relief efforts in some outlying parishes of New Orleans, Honore fumed:
"I don't care if it is Hancock County, Mississippi -- we are not going to have that kind of issue."

The comments that sparked Honore's verbal blast were apparently made by US Representative Bobby Jindal, who represents a New Orleans district.
"The bureaucracy needs to do more than one thing at a time. It's appropriate to save people with helicopters, but it can't be done to the exclusion of everything else," Jindal was quoted by Time magazine as saying.

Honore did not discount that Jindal may be basing his complaints on "isolated" incidents, and said he would follow up with him.

From what I've seen and heard so far, this general looks like a LEADER!

The moronics in the MSM starts at the bottom. Take nooz crews - they're too stupid to come in from the strom, they sensationalize the most negative and outrageous events available without providing much useful informtion as to what's really happening, and then they 'stir the pot' by grandstanding and asking stupid questions at news conferences. They all seem to want to 'be the news' rather than reporting on the situation.

In the case of the General, I saw some punk reporter who had probably flown in on a chartered chopper ask him as he arrived, "What took you so long to get here . . ." The General asked him if he had any idea of what it takes to move a couple thousand troops, and told him to get out of the way :neener:

He was interviewed on FOX early Sunday AM. One of the better interviews I have watched. Blunt, straightforward, decidedly not a sissy. Funny, too funny. Here we have a sophisticated 3-star with his Cajun accent, Pepe le Pew moustache, and referring to people in DC as "big brain people."

Toward the end of the interview he went on a riff about the kinds of things the military was doing and he ended his riff with the phrase "over!" Giggles in the background.

Informative and entertaining at the same time. He is quite capable of going off on some reporters stoopid questions. He'll be a local star by the time this is over.

I caught part of an interview with him around lunchtime. Some reporter asked him a question about all the "snipers" in NO. The general proceeded to tell him, bluntly, something to the effect that there are snipers in Iraq, not in NO . He then asked the reporter why everytime they hear a shot fired, the media wants the call the shooter a "sniper"??

I was hoping he would ask the reporter if he had any more stupid questions :D

Very nice juxtaposition there. By putting "President George W. Bush's" name so close to the part about Honore blowing up, you create the impression in the careless reader that he blew up and called something that Bush said "BS." If that were truly the case, they'd state it.

When doing this, make sure to use title, first name, middle initial, and last name, so no-one can miss it.

Am I just too suspicious?

I hope he runs for Mayor of New N'Awluns

I think he could be Mayor, Governor, Dir. of FEMA, and Secretary of Homeland Security at the same time, and do a better job than all of them put together. The Army doesn't let lightweights become 3-stars...like Patton said, "you lead, follow, or get the h@ll out of the way"...the only way to handle a catastrophe like this one.

it is amazing to see someone of that stature who calls it like they see it, and isn't afraid to step on tender liberal and media toes and be some PC pansy, just dead set on doing his job. we could use a few more like that.

I can't wait to see some of this footage, anyone have some links?

Saying that he "raged" during the "B.S." statement is a large overstatement, based on what I saw on TV. He was emphatic, and made his point very clearly. I would not want to be anywhere around when LTG Honore rages. That would be volcanic.

As others have said, he is a good man. Don't get to be a LTG by being timid, or stupid. A true leader. Like to meet him someday and thank him personally for not putting up with crap from the media. He is as anti-PC as one can be.
