I know the primary is 9mm, and I've heard of the .30 Cal Luger.
Does anyone know which models are in which calibers?

I'm asking because I might be purchasing one from a guy I met at a gun show. I looked over every inch of the gun and I'm going to call the guy tomorrow. It's a 1940 S/42 in very good condition. All matching numbers and mag, However, I forgot to ask the guy what caliber it is!
Those dang Nazis didn't put the caliber on there either!

1940 S/42 4-digit S/N. 9mm or .30 Cal Luger?

Anyone?

Will be 9mm. S/42 is code for Mauser manufacture, and 1940 is pre-war, so it should be a good one if the price is right. Check to see if an original mag is with it (even better). Four digit number doesn't mean anything because they repeated serial # sequences, so it doesn't necessarily mean it's a low number.

alright, great! I had a hunch it was 9mm. And this gun is really nice for being 70 years old. Mag is matching and correct/original with the proofmark on it. The price is pretty good. I'm trading my Mauser Model 66 (fancy European sporting rifle in 30-'06), and $700 cash, making the price around $1700-$1800. I think I'm getting a deal, the average price on gunbroker is $2000+ last time I seen. I'll put up pictures as soon as I can.
