So I was forced to watch Tel Toro's recent movie "Pan's Labyrinth" under threats of my wife who thinks I am not sensitive enough.

So with much reluctance, I entered the theater last night. And much to my pleasant surprise, the movie was surprising violent and bloody.

And I was fascinated by the weapons used in the movie.

The Francoist captain was wielding a 9mm luger with 4 inch barrel constantly in the movie, and the weapon seemed surprisingly efficient and powerful when killing off people. His subordinates were carrying Nazi Hi-power variations, and at one point, I swear to God that I saw a Tokarev held by one of the officers.

Has anyone seen this movie, or know what the heck I am talking about. :D

I've seen the trailer for the movie and will admit openly I was thoroughly intrigued. I have no idea what the premise of the movie actually is though. It sounds like it has guns and gore though, so now my interest is really piqued.

Lugers, eh? In 9mm you say? Mmmmmm... I'll have to think about that.

yeah, man. Quite bloody as well... some guy's face was smashed in with a bottle, and some guys face was slashed open by a knife, and the crisp report of a luger when fired, and the amazing muzzle flash... the captain was using luger in combat against the rebels, and killed a whole bunch of them armed with british wesbley revolvers, and he was chasing after his step-daughter with the same luger... the movie was luger-centric.

The Luger is an iconic pistol. It is very recognizable to the public at large as a sidearm used by some very, very bad men. As such, it is doubtless used as symbolism (even though I have not yet seen the movie).

I'm not a bad man and I want a Luger:(

I also look like a typical German; blond hair, blue eyes so maybe I shouldn't get one.

Anyways, the Mrs. and I have put the movie on our "To watch" list. She enjoys watching blood and gore more than I do so we both should enjoy this.

You missed a whole boat load of Astra pistols in your review.

The lead bad guy has a Luger, (Makes sense--as supplied by the Condor Legion this is a way to compare him to a nazi without using the word, also iconicly, it's the penultimate bad guy gun). The rest of his cronies appear to have Astra pistols and period Spanish Mauser rifles.

The rebels have a great assortment of gear.

This is a fine film, just erroneously marketed.

Dr. Rob, oh! so they won't Tokarev or Hi-Powers... they were Star 1911s... that made perfect sense now because somehow that pistol didn't look like Hi-Power or Tokarev!

Yeah, it sounded like a kids' movie, but it wasn't.

Great movie! I really enjoyed it by far one the best movies Ive seen in a long long time. I was paying close attention to the guns also, I thought the scenes where people were shot had a great sense of realism. Sad ending, I don't get emotional too often when I see a movie but I was left with a real heartbroken feeling at the end. Oh and I thought it had a great musical score.

I really enjoyed that movie, one of the most profound movies I've seen in a long time, particularly liked the creepy-baby-eating-eye-in-the-hands guy scene...
