Lyman Case Trimmer inconsistent

I looked long and hard at trimmers and went with the LE Wilson Case Trimmer Kit with the Micrometer Adjustment Screw. This thing is literally built like a tank and trims VERY consistently. I would highly recommend it.

This thing is definitely NOT junk, and although it may cost more than other alternatives, it does the job so well and is built so strong that I cannot believe I will ever get rid of it.

Hope this helps.

Got my Trim-It today and I gave it a try on about 20 cases. I'm very impressed. It's very consistent although I see some slight variation in length, but I think it's my dial calipers. I measure the same case several times and I see a few thousandths variation depending how I hold it. It's a Hornady that I bought last year. Is there a trick to this?

I don't have a Hornady brand case trimmer but a different stainless steel brand dial micrometer.

After using some of the other case trimmers I was getting a lot of short (up to 0.0010") cases. With the Trim-It, I am getting all case lengths of + 0.00 and -0.002". The number of cases that are off by more than 0.001" off my target of 1.750" for .223 Remington are probably less than 2% off all the >500 cases that I trimmed the first time with my Trim-It.

Ouch ! Spent all that money on the new trimmer and was the caliper . That's a kick in the head, My advice is to set the trimmer, trim them and don't measure, just have faith they will all be the same length...whatever that actually is , .001 to .002 is not going to matter.

It's not the calipers. It's the way I was holding the casing. But, the trimmer is awesome. I was off by 0.010" before. Now, they vary by only +/- 0.002" which I think is my way of measuring. I'm very happy with Trim-It. It's really fast too. It changed my most dreaded part of reloading into a pleasure!

I have 2 Dillon Rapid trim, a RCBS hand powered bench trimmer and a Lyman drill press trimmer. All have carbide cutters. If I have quite a few cases to trim on The RCBS I'll remove the crank handle and chuck up my 1/2" drill motor to it.
