Hello,

Found a used Smith and Wesson M & P 9 mm. Light use, with only one magazine being used, clean internals, etc. My shop had it listed for 499, but recently dropped the price to $429. It has all the accesories, including paperwork and Warranty card enclosed in the case.

Since I had been looking for a 9mm, and thought the price was pretty fair, I put the gun on layaway. Later that night, as most of us do, I looked up reviews of the pistol, and found some complaints of corrosion or rust, even with the SS slide and coating. Many have not had any problems, but it's one of those things floating around the internet.

I returned to the shop today and spent a little more time witht he gun. Internals and barrel look good, trigger is nice and smooth. Sights are well aligned...oveall this pistol looks like it has had light use.

One thing I did notice: There appeared to be slight pitting on the front of the slide, both on the flats and the top. I couldn't see any indication of actual rust or active corrosion, but a comparision to the new pistols in that line showed that this was not present in the other guns. It looks like the pitting was present before the black coating was placed at the factory, as the finish is intact over these areas. I can't see any indication of refinish. The pistol case has the original stickers, shipping tags etc, and was marked 2/1/2008, so I would guess it is of recent manufacture.

There is not a lot of pitting, and I would not say that it takes much away from the appearance or function of the gun. If I had not read reports of rust problems, I never would have looked at it that hard, most likely.

So, what do you all think? Cosmetic only, save the 150 bucks and buy this one, or would this spook you away from the purchase? Having a hard time deciding about this one...I would appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Amflyer

Make note of the pitting and of your reservations and offer him $400 and I'll bet he takes it and you'll feel really, really good about your purchase. When the M&P was new I bought one in 40. Terrible finish, some weird kind of of "stainless" and the rusting was a problem. Since my son was shooting it in uspsa (meaning it was shot a lot) we had it hard chromed. Its a fantastic firearm and with the hard chrome it looks just as great. I bought mine new for 420, but that was some great deal I happened to be in the right place at the right time. They're going for low 5's at Bud's.

The metal finishing on some of the early M&P 9s and 45s was reportedly a little rough. Pointing it out might be worth a small discount.

Your investments should not make you lose sleep at night. Find one that gives you peace of mind.

I agree that this isn't such a good price for a used M&P with only one magazine. You can find used M&P's for $400-$425 or so with both magazines.

Also, as was pointed out, you can buy one new, for $480, from Bud's (after delivery and FFL transfer fees) and S&W has a holiday rebate that you can send in for two free magazines or $50 dollars off...lowering the price to $430 (though, at the price of mags, the two free mags is the better deal.)

buy a NEW ONE. I love mine, no pits or nothing goes bang every time, I recently had an action job done on it by David bowie of bowie tactical and oh my what a shooter this gun is . Most accurate range gun I hve ever owned. Notmy carry gun as it is just to big but I didn'tbuy it for that either. The Smith M & P is a damn good well made gun, that alot of "smithy" are now doign some serious custom work on to..

I've seen NIB M&Ps on gunbroker for $400. Even with shipping and FFL fee that is only $440.

Bud's delivers for free. The only extra is the optional delivery insurance of $6. or $8. per pistol.

If you pay for them with either their in house credit card or a check/money order the price you see is the price you pay.

I've bought lots of guns from Bud's - all great transactions. And no, I'm not affiliated but I think I'm falling in love with Gurney ....LOL!

Don't forget that when you buy out of state you don't pay tax...that covered my ffl cost.
The M&P is a do all weapon...Home defense, carry, competition. Here's a pic of my son taking his second Gold Metal at the Sunshine State Games. He's a B class Production shooter in uspsa. Like Jocko said you can get a really sick trigger on these things...as close to a single action trigger as I've ever experienced...well worth the money, which isn't substantial.

$499.00 for a used S&W M&P 9mmNATO?

I'd check www.gunsamerica.com . $499.00 seems high for a used S&W pistol. Note; S&W is now offering a $50.00 rebate or 2 free M&P model magazines(a $60.00 value, ;)) for new S&W pistols.

Thanks all, thought about it and took the used one off layaway...bought a new one that is same price more or less.
