Well, I think it finally happened. I was shooting rounds 300 - 400 through it today and I think my mag release finally gave way.

I'm not sure of the exact problem that some of you have been experiencing (jragsdale, dhart, to name a few), but here is what mine is doing.

With slide locked back, I can push a full magazine in with no problem. However when I push in the mag release, it feels extremely gritty and basically binds up, not allowing the spring to rebound. This, essentially, "locks out" the mag release. So when trying to reinsert the magazine, the mag release in still engaged and the magazine will not lock into place.

Is this the same problem that some of you guys are experiencing?

It went back into the safe and the G26 has gone back onto my hip.

I tried putting a small dab of clp on it to possibly flush out any grit or anything that might have made it into the mechanism, but no dice.

I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts. I'm going to call Smith tomorrow.

Thanks guys and gals.

No, this isn't the same problem as my situation. I experienced the following:

1. One of the white dots on my rear sight fell out.
2. The slide would lock back with 1 round left in the magazine.
3. In the middle of firing, the magazine would fall out of the gun WITHOUT pressing the mag release.

All issues were fixed. Turn around time was quick and Smith upgraded the white dot sights with tritium night sights.

However, having a problem with the mag release, even if it isn't the exact same problem, seems to be where all the complaints are.

Sorry you had to join our little Compact mag release club :D

I have a fullsize .40 and no my mag release failed because it was too sensitive and each time I fired it the mag would pop out.

As I've stated in many threads regarding M&P problems I've gone through several thousand rounds since I sent it back and there have been no problems since.

Send it back to S&W its a very easy process I got mine back in about 10 days and they completely fixed the problem and it didn't cost me a dime. I called them up, they emailed me a UPS shipping label and I sent it out the very next day, then about 10 days later the UPS guy showed up at my door and that was that.

It took me a few dozen trips to the range before I felt comfortable carrying my M&P again as my ccw, but I feel ok about it now.

Good Luck!

Indeed I have joined the ranks. Just called Smith and it looks like the baby M&P is taking a trip back to the mothership.

Got any tips on how to hint for night sights?:D

Honestly, there's no reason to hint. Smith wants to make you happy.

Tell them: "I'm disappointed with my M&P. In addition to correcting the malfunctions, night sights would help to reestablish my enthusiasm for this new weapon."

No reason to beat around the bush. Just said it.

Good luck and stay safe.

I think you get the gist

You bet. I wrote a short letter that I'm putting in the package taped to the box. I should have told them over the phone this morning, but didn't think about it.

We'll see what happens. [3stooges] Couldn't hoit. [/3stooges]

I knew the mag drop problem was an issue with the 40c, but apparently some 9c and full size owners were affected as well. It'll be interesting to see if any reports of this surface from M&P45 ownerse, as I haven't heard of it occurring with that model. But then again it seems like the 9mm and .40 versions far outnumber the .45 so far, at least on the forums. Since the problem mainly occurs after a fairly high round count, I guess the 9mm and .40 guys can afford to get there quicker. ;)

Oh, and let us know how it works out tydephan. You did use the exact quote above in your request for night sites, right? Wouldn't it be funny if everyone who sent their M&P in used that same canned text? S&W would surely know something was up! Trying to take advantage of them? Never! :D

Yeah, the 9 and 40 have a good head start on the 9 and 40 as well. I think, to the best of my knowledge, the 45 was released 10-12 months after the 9 and 40 fullsize.

LOL. It was very close to what was written above. :D:p:evil:

Smith techs: "Damn that evil jragsdale!"

I just got a free mag when my 40c went back...no nitesites. However, the second catch failed as well. I sent a coupla hot letters, and ended up getting a one on one range session with one of the LEO sales reps (I'm not a LEO) He had some of the "new and improved" mag catches, and after several several hundred rounds on his dime, I was happy

I did get a knife and a hat too, but no nitesites. Maybe I should write a letter??

LOL

Well, I just received my M&P9c back from the factory. The mag release is no longer binding.

Oh...and it has a set of night sights on it as well. :D:D

Kudos to Smith and Wesson for really trying to please their customers.

I'll be real happy if the problem doesn't re-occur.

Just thought I'd update you guys that might be interested.
