M1 Carbine handguard groove too thick/not deep enough?

The groove in my CMP rack grade NPM interferes slightly with the sight picture... is that normal? I don't suppose I should sand it down a bit with a dowel or something...

What does the forum think about metal ventilated handguards?

It is not "normal". I would look for a replacement. The metal handguards have never really appealed to me. I prefer the original handguards for USGI Carbines. Try one if you like though. It's your Carbine......... Post a photo when you can..............
