i have fired a couple hundred rounds now through my M1. i teared it down the other day just for ????s and giggles, i didnt really clean it all that good, but i did notice while it was all apart that there was a grease on a lot of the mechanism's, kind of like axle grease. when i tear it down next time and want to clean it throughly, should i put another layer of grease on it?

thanks

It's a good idea to remove and replace as much of the grease as you can. Grease will collect grit.

The tracks in the receiver for the bolt and oprod, any rubs on the side of the receiver and barrel, the saddle of the oprod, the spur of the hammer, the camming surface on the inside of the oprod hump. Any moving part that's worn shiny probably needs it too. I also like to put and ultra thin swipe on the bottom of the bolt.

I generally don't bother with the oprod spring except annually.

When your done, cycle the action a few times and wipe off any globs. I apply it thin using a solvent or acid brush.

The M1 is different than most other firearms in that is REQUIRES grease to be used as the lubricant for long term function. Unlike most other weapons (where oil is the lubricant), the M1 has numerous sliding contact points where grease is the preferred lubricant.

If you are not sure what to lubricate, get a copy of the Army Field Manual, or better yet, check out this site:
