Alright, my birthday is Monday, and I want to treat myself to an M1 Garand...Am I too late?

I really don't care what kind of shape its in, the cheaper the rifle the better, because I want to rebuild it anyway.

Is there anywhere online to still get one, or am I going to have to get lucky by going to a local shop?

Edit: Sorry, I just looked down the page and saw another post about this :)

Rack Grade Rifles are mechanically the same as Field Grade rifles above, but will show more wear on many of their parts, may have more pitting on the metal parts than a Service Grade rifle. Wood will be sound, but well used, with cracks, poor fit, and many dents and gouges. Throat erosion will be 5 or more and muzzle wear may be over a 3 on a muzzle gauge. Because the overall appearance and condition will generally be rougher than any other grade, rifles in this grade are considered poor to fair. Shipping and Handling $22.95 per rifle.

What on this rifle will be reusable? How much would I be looking to spend to fix it up.

Thanks,

If you can go to the North store and hand pick one you might be OK. A mail order RG from the CMP can be a bit of a crap shoot. As they say, it 's luck of the draw. But if you're going to rebuild, perhaps a stripped receiver might be the way to go. HTH.

Where is the North store at? Probably too far north for me...

If I decided to build from a stripped receiver, how much would I be looking to spend to build a respectable Garand(one that looks and shoots good)

Say I go the Rack Grade for 395 route...How much would it cost to get it restored to nice?

Stock set $70
New barrel $165 (used service grade can be found for about 120)
Parkerizing $75

so for a little over 700(plus shipping and transfer fees) I could have a nice looking and nice shooting garand...Or is there something else I'm missing.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of MOA will this rifle get(or have the potential to get).

I bought the next grade up, which they are now out of, for $425 - Field Grade.

My guns a great shooter, lots of barrel life left - no reason to rebuild it right away.

You may get a gun with a new or almost new barrel, just depends on how your luck falls.

You will get a functioning rifle, or they will do their best to make it right.

14-15 hrs round trip seems like alot to me....

I have a poll open right now, if you guys wouldn't mind, post your suggestions in there, and let this thread die off.

Thanks
