Hi all,
In 1940 Ordnance, the War Dept., sent to the US Senate Sub-Committee the requirements for arming the Regular US Army and the National Guard with the M1 Garand. At that time the US Army and the National Guard had a preset strength i.e., 462,000 men. Ball Park, how many M1 Garands did Ordnance say it needed?
Easy one
Thanks again
Clancy

Well you know how military units always ask for three times what they need since they'll only get 2/3 of it....... I'd say they probably asked for a million of them. :)

Hi all,
The answer to this quiz is that Ordnance needed 161,464 M1 Rifles to arm the US Army and the National Guard as of April 3 1940.
Thanks again
Clancy
ps wait until you hear about the PMP!!

Remember that at that time, the Army included the Air Corps, and its men, as well as officers and many other troops (e.g., machinegunners) were still armed with pistols, a front line infantry figure of 161k out of a total of 462k would be about right.

In the event, they did make a few more M1 rifles.

Jim
