M14 Project

i shoot the 49/56(adjustable gas value added) and the 36/51, both had been rearsenaled to like new condition. i use stick powder, no ball powder in them. we owned the night with the starlights(mounted on M-14,s) in vn. eastbank.
some still do own the night with one . This one was "upgraded" by Morovision from Israelian issued units which take AA batteries in a carosel and a better tube. With the addition of a Surefire IR scout light it has a beautiful picture to 300 yards . I have the whole FA link ect for this early M1a but took it off as it was useless and extra weight , all surplus TRW except reciever that I had brought to NM specs in late 80s by Smith Enterprise. It is now loosened up nicely to be a good field rifle. It is currently scoped with a QD mount and I modified a Garand leather comb rise to work very well for me. The ANPV2 scope is stored in its container and well sighted in . I gave my son my FNFALs to take to his place in Oregon and stored my HK91 , which has a bazillion rounds thru it up in my remote place there since 2000. California does not like these grandfather 30 round military mags as of tommorrow :)

For those that tout the superiority of forged receivers..............
Norincos are forged.

Back in the day when Polytech M-14's were available the word was that some of them had softish bolts...but otherwise were solid guns. Throw a GI bolt in and they were said to be good if they happened to be one with a soft one that set back the locking lugs with extended use. Have no experience with them...other than holding one in the gunstore, so this is hearsay.

Cooldill,

Hopefully you haven't been diswayed from pursuing your M1A project. It sounds like you know what you want and getting to that goal would be pretty easy.

Good luck!

No, but judging from what I've read about Norinco M14s I wouldn't mind if they sold some of those to terrorists.
some of the most accurate M14's I ever shot were norinco and poly techs. rumors were spread by greedy American companies cause they want to sell their rifles for $3000 +. a guy on the M14 forum was told his norinco bolt was junk by clint McKee at fulton armory .so he buys the bolt from fulton and his brother worked where they had the most high tech way to measure steel properties and the fulton bolt was garbage and the norinco exceeded spec. he posted everything and the tech results of the steel on the forum

Thanks, Nature Boy. :)

Right now I'm getting my muzzleloader project done, but after that...

I've just heard too many first hand accounts of them being hit and miss. Though I have heard that the good ones are pretty nice.

Very cool, thank you. I am wanting mine to look like a USGI M14 that has been "locked" to semi-auto only fire as I have read many were. How exactly that looks is still a mystery to me and I would love more info on how to duplicate that look.

I am wanting a wood stocked, iron sighted, standard issue M14 look for sure. No big scopes, plastic stocks, none of that jazz. Just a 1950-when wood n' steel USA battle rifle! :)

PS: I am selling my PTR-91 as we speak to fund the project. I have found I don't so much like the gun. Ergonomics are just not to my liking and I find myself leaving the rifle behind when heading to the range. No bueno. But I love shooting M1 Garands but the .30-06 ammo is more expensive than I'd like. I have handled M1As in the past several times and they just feel so good! The warm wood on my cheeck, the beautiful aperture sights... that parkerized steel... oh I'm getting the vapors!! :D

Thanks for the help on this one, gang. I have always wanted an "M14" but had to settle on the PTR because at the time just couldn't afford it. Now I've saved up and am finally ready to get an American battle rifle, the one of my dreams!

Lysander,

Those DO look very nice. Pay attention Cooldill.

Interesting that they mount to the stock rather than the gun like a real unit, though likely a lot easier to do.

Gordon,

Nice set up. How does that scope deal with the muzzle flash? One that I was once issued would shut down about a second and a half or two and reset and it was annoying. I used it on the regular pop ups on a night time range and thought I was missing every shot until the spotter with a tripod mounted NOD behind me and off to one side said I was hitting every one. Target was falling and resetting during the scope reset!

I disliked the AN/PVS-2 like that on the M-16A1 as it was mounted so far to the side and the rifle so light that the thing wanted to roll towards the scope while sighting and in recoil. Carrying with the offset thing was a pain. We mainly used the -2 for a hand held viewing device and only slipped it on the rail when in a position. They spent most of their time when out of the hard box in the carry bag.

The scope that replaced it though mounted on the carrying handle "proper" rather than on a bracket through the carrying handle......but placed the eyepiece so high that cheek weld became "Chin touch" at best.

Weirdest thing I used a -2 on was on an 90mm M67 Recoilless which had great big hose clamps holding on a mounting rail......weird does not begin to describe it. I really think that was pointless. Use the -2 as a viewer then call Company mortars for flares and use the normal sight folks!

Not too much flash from the real flashhider. You might get a wink out for a fraction of a second sometimes. When you add modern infra red flashlights or illumination from IR lasers one of these tuned 1st gen NODS really perk up.
