So I furnished my Springfield M1A with a USGI oversized walnut stock and a fake fulton armory switch selector, and I was thinking about getting the USGI bipod that clamps onto the gas tubes near the barrel.

My question is: Does that USGI bipod work well? And does it strip finish off the gas tubes over time...

I was debating about getting the "front swivel with accessory rail" from Fulton and get a bipod that clamps onto a rail but the stuff is like $70.

Any inputs will be appreciated.

I actually just went through this over the past week. I ended up ordering the rail mount w/sling mount, along with the rail-attachable swivel stud. Works with my Harris bipod like it was made for it. And the gun looks amazing too, maybe I'll take a picture later tonight.

I'd suggest getting the aluminum rail-mount swivel stud (as opposed to the plastic one). Also, you'll need a 1/4" drill bit and a drill to get the rivets out that hold in the stock sling mount. It sounds harder than it is, I installed everything in about 10 minutes.

I have one on my SuperMatch. I was shocked at how badly it worked. It took a gun capable of 1" groups and made it into a 3" scatter gun. For looks its great. For shooting it stinks.

Question: My old Springfield walnut stock had the QD stud installed by the previous owner but I have never seen this type of screws before... How do I uninstall the QD stud from the median weight stock, and how do I uninstall the swivel from the USGI stock (it had screws that looked like they were bottoned in somehow).

Thanks!

General Geoff, how do I reversibly remove the rivets from the original GI front swivel?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, rivets are pretty much a one-way deal. You'll have to drill or grind 'em out. I drilled mine.

If you absolutely have to reattach the original swivel mount later on, you could probably get a couple of bolts and nuts from a hardware store, and fasten it back on with a bit of loctite.
