I have an M1A in preban config. With it when I bought it several years ago, I got an accessory that I would like some info about. It is, what I would call, a 'detachable muzzle brake'. It is a sleeve that fits over the flash hider which has holes on and around the top sides but not the bottom. It has a swinging shackle that folds behind the bayonet lug and cinches down with a screw and lock nut which holds it on and very stable. I have been told it was for a M14 and was used to cut down on muzzle climb and torqueing when fired full auto.

What is the thing actually called? What might a reasonable price for one of these be? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the correct nomenclature is "muzzle stabilizer".
I think they run around $50.00 for a real milled steel (not Chinese) one from someplace like Fulton Armory.

They were designed for the the M15, the squad auto variant of the M14 meant to replace the BAR. It wasn't near enough to keep that thing under control.
