I was just curious as to what would be the most secure mount for a Springfield M1A? I'm not sure if a cantilevered mount froward of the action or a side mounted option would maintain zero better. I'm leaning toward the cantilever option but I'm just wanting some different brands and maybe some pictures. Thanks guys!

2nd the Bassett....best out there, Sadlak close...just my opinion, I have a few M1As, only one with scope and it is a Bassett mount.... holds very good.

Smith Enterprises.
All steel, very well machined, exact tolerances. Pricey, but worth it.
Mine has held up great for years.

I guess it depends on how usable you want your irons to be. I went with the ARMS #18 because it is the lowest you can get, and allows you to still have your full iron sight picture over the top of it when the optic is removed. It is very solid.

My Sadlak airborne is not only light and solid, just like the ARMS it allows for iron sight usage.

I have the sadlak airborne & its great. Also they treated me great both on the phone & in person at Camp Perry.

I had an ARMS 18, and loved the low profile, solid design. However, with my rifle, and quite a few others apparently, it is too low for reliable function. Ejected brass gets caught between it and the op rod, causing malfunctions.

I now have a Bassett(high picatinny), and would recommend one. Great mount, simple and repeatable. No trapped brass problems.

The CASM looks great for a rig that would be used for scope only, without ever using the factory irons.

CASM has a BUIS via a hole through the sight base. It's not adjustable, but it will hit a man sized target in a 'back up' scenario.

The issue with the ARMS mount and SAI rifles is with SAI's extractors, some of which are out of spec and cause the to eject at too high an angle. Put a GI extractor on it and you shouldn't have a problem.

I tried just about everything to get the ARMS 18 to work, because I really liked the mount. I researched the problem, switched both the extractor and the ejector to GI, played around with angles on the ejector, played around with different loads and bullet weights, and even cut out the center section of rail to mimic the older ARMS 18.

Nothing worked. I would think that I had the problem solved, and then 60 or 80 rounds later, I would have a malfunction. Finally gave up and went with the Bassett, no complaints so far, it seems like mine is going to live up to Bassett's reputation .

subsonic rounds

ok, I am an old 58 year old ex grunt. I hear about sub sonic rounds in the 1050-1100 fps velocity of these rounds. I dont understand or see the purposes of these rounds. what are their purposes, pros, cons etc. and why would an old timer like me want to or need to use one. any info would be appreciated from an out of the loop shooter.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm just pricing things out right now. I will either do this with some quality glass or do a 700 build. I'll start a new thread for ideas for that though. :).
