In my quest to find a decently priced M1 or SKS, I was at Big 5 and was told that on friday, they will be selling Armory Refurbished M91/30's for $89. The M44 just got OFF sale for that same price. Should I get the 91 and save the 100 bucks or possibly wait for the M44 to go on sale again?

I'm really itching to get a vintage rifle and after only finding Chinese and Russian SKS's for 400 and up, the 89 dollar M91/30 sounds like a good deal. Any thoughts? BIG BLUE

Get the 91/30 if it's in nice shape.

You can get an M-44 just about anywhere. That price is awfully high for an M-44 unless it's extremely collectible special for some reason.

Whatever you get, check the bore for sharp rifling and no pitting. Also and maybe even more importantly, check the chamber throat for excessive wear.

The price on the m44 is ridulous! The 91/30 is also high but not that bad. If you don't have a C&R license I guess $89 for a 91/30 isn't too bad.

Seems pretty cotton-pickin' high for an M-44.

Dunham's Sporting goods (Here in the Mid-West) sells them normally for $80 or less...sometimes as low as $50 'on-sale'. From what I can see, Big 5 is about the same as Dunham's here.

Bought my M-44 in Nov 2002 for $49.95. 1954 Romanian vintage. Wood was a bit dinged, action/barrel, etc OK

Only buy rifles from Big 5 when they are on sale. The regular prices are crazy. Also ask to see the rifles in the back, the ones in the rack usually look pretty crappy. I got my m44 for $50 there. It was in the back and it is actually a nice rifle with very good bluing and the stock has some dings but not bad. Mark

91/30.

Many of the arsenal refurbished 91/30 are ex-sniper rifles. This means that you can pretty easily build you up a sniper version of the rifle if you ever wanted too.

Take the rifle, pull the bolt back and look at the left hand (as you would fire it) side of the receiver wall on the inside and see if there are two or three holes that have been filled in with studs. Thats what you want. (IMHO)

Most 91/30's are actually lighter than M44's and more accurate.

The M44 is way overpriced... even for a perfect condition gun.

My local Big 5 will advertise either the 91/30, M38, and M44 on sale for $79.95 about twice a month. I just picked up a 91/30 that is an Izhevsk Arsenal from 1931 with all-matching serial numbers. After a week of cleaning, I can get 4" groups at 200 yards using old Russian milsurp 205gr ammo. Corrosive but a hosing off of the barrel and bolt face with Windex with Ammonia kills the salts and then just clean normally.

There is a tremendous amount of information on Mosin-Nagants on a number of forums:
http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/phpBB2/index.php
http://www.surplusrifle.com/russiannagant/maintenance.asp
http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/mb/surplusrifle
Another site is www.mosin-nagant.net but it appears to have been suspended by the web hosting company for now  There was a lot of good information there, hope it comes back.

You might want to print this page when you go to look at any of the Mosins: http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/Arsenals.htm This will give you a basic idea of where the rifle came from. Take a bore light or a tiny flashlight to inspect the bore, looking for rust or pitting or counterboring.

There will be a lot of funny-looking cyrillic characters punched around the receiver but the majority of those are proof marks or from re-arsenal work. For example a square box with a diagonal line in it is a re-arsenal mark (may also appear on the stock). Lots of cosmoline on most of them so a good cleaning will usually produce a very nice looking rifle.

The Mosins have s/n's on the receiver, bolt, and bottom of the mag well. Try to find a rifle with matching numbers. The M44 is a real fire breather. It will kick like a mule and depending on the ammo, will provide lots of muzzle flash.

"I'm really itching to get a vintage rifle "

Just on the offhand chance that you haven't already heard, you really should check out the "curio and relic" firearms license. Search here or on the web, and you'll find plenty to read. It costs thirty bucks, but it would pay for itself with just the purchase of your 91/30.

I just ordered a Russian M44 from Southern Ohio Gun for $52.00, that included shipping. Price was $37.99 if I recall.

Your results may vary. :D
