why should i get it.?
I know its dirt cheap, the ammo is dirt cheap.
please answer in regards to these questions.....

1) in regards to 200 yard accuracy, on a scale of ten, how would you rate the m44?

2) i'm not so into bayonets, can i get it off?

3) i am interested in a bipod, can i get one on without buying a new stock that would cost more than the rifle?

4) is there any new production 765 54r or is it all old surplus?

5) and what is the capacity of the clip, i take it its top loading.....

Can't speak for 200 yard accuarcy, I only shoot my at 25 & 100. M44 is plenty accurate at these ranges though. If you don't like bayonets, consider a M38 usually about the same price. Identical rifle without a bayonet. Don't know about bipods. Yes, you can purchase new manufactured or surplus ammo in 7.62x54r. I paid $5 a bx at the last show for new Wolf ammo. The Mosin holds 5 rounds loaded through the top. Can you stripper clips if you'd like. Good rifle, get one.

Chapperjoe:

My experiences with MY M-44...Your Mileage Will Vary:

I can keep mine in 2" @100 yds for 5 shots, and I am no great shakes as a long-range rifleman.

Winchester, Federal, Selleir & Bellot all make new 7.62x54R ammo. Not nearly as cheap as the "Mil-Surp" stuff, but good ammo. Norma also makes some top-notch 7.62x54, but is is top-notch priced. Wolf also makes new ammo, and another Russian maker is Barnaul Arsenal

On MY M-44 bayo folded vs extended makes about 4" horizontal shift in Point of Impact. I am not a physicist or metalurgist; has something to do with harmonics and horizontal "barrel whip" when firing. MAY be ammo sensitive.

Don't know about the bipod aspects.

5 rounds mag capacity. Can single-load ammo, or use the "stripper clips", also known as "mag-chargers".

Couple of other web sites for more info on the Mosin-Nagant series:

www.SurplusRifle.com

But I love to shoot my M-44 with the bayo extended. First time i shot it, a kid (looked to be about 12-13) asked "Hey Mister, what is that long screwdriver on your gun, and what do you use it for?"

"Not really a screwdriver" I said, while poking one of the gallon water jugs I had with me..

Kid: ":what: :what: :what: :what: "

Something else, too....If you get some of the mil-surp "Heavy Ball" ammo, the muzzle blast and flame are well....spectacular

200 yards? Iron sites?

I have good vision, but shoot old battle rifles at 50 yards only. At 100 or more the target is just a tiny dot behind the front sight.

Now, with a scope....

I have a 91/30 but still waiting on the "right" M44 to appear at the local Big 5. For $80 these rifles are a sweet deal if you take tim eto closely inspect them .

The M44 may not have the 200yd accuracy of the 91/30 (after a whole lot of cleaning and paying attention to what I'm doing on the bench, I can get 4-6" groups at 200yds with my 91/30 using Russian 205gr milsurp stuff) but with a decent barrel it should be accurate out to 100-125 yards.

As foghornl mentioned, leave the bayonet on and extend it for shooting. Lots of people on the Mosin-Nagant.com forum recommend this for improved accyracy. Apparently the weight and length of the bayonet does help with barrel harmonics. Besides, if you keep missing the target and run out of ammo you can always charge the target!!

Wolf makes new 7.62x54R ammo in 150gr loads that have copper-washed bullets. Still a steel case, but it will be non-corrosive stuff although not reloadable. It runs about $5/box of 20. There is also some Czech "Silver-tip" milsurp ammo that is cheap and works fine but is corrosive. Windex with Ammonia down the bore and on the bolt face solves that problem.

The M44 is a great crowd-pleaser at the range. Noisy and with some ammo, a very impressive muzzle flash. Kicks like a mule with the heavy ammo!

Chapperjoe, the only thing keeping the spike bayonet on the rifle is a flathead screw.

I'd advise you get the M44 now while they're still cheap and plentiful.
I know it's hard to imagine the supply drying up, but I thought the same thing of Norinco type 56 SKS rifles until I could no longer find an unissued one for the $89 I paid.

thanks

great info guys.
I plan on picking one up from sog for 40 bucks!!!!
no modifications though i will be removing the bayonet.
I want to remove the sights too, see if i could shoot better with sights or without them, lol.
