So, I decided to buy one of the Russian M-44 "parts guns" that SOG was selling. To my surprise, underneath 14 pounds of cosmoline was a complete rifle. I cleaned it up as much as I had patience for (keeping in mind the $49 price). The barrel was completely plugged with cosmo. Took forever to clean. As I worked with a solvent soaked brush, I kept telling mystelf....I should see rifling eventually, right? Mmmmmm......no.

It seems my rifle came complete with everything but the rifling. There is a hint of where the rifling used to be...but that's about it.

Just for grins I decided to fire off a few rounds and see what kind of groups I could get at 50 yards.

I aimed for the center of my cardboard target stand (didn't bother with a target). Only three rounds hit the cardboard. Maybe you guys have seen this before, but it's a first for me. I have never seen bullets hit the target completely sideways:eek:......Pretty funny.

Wow, that's a spent bore! Maybe you should try shotshells.

As to cleaning, you did it the hard way. It's much, much easier to just get the loose stuff with rags then use a tub, some household liquid dish soap, and very hot water. The cosmoline melts off. Wipe dry and oil the hot steel and you're good to go.

Thanks, I'll try that next time.

Yep, it's pretty worn. If you stick a 7.62x54 round down in the muzzle, it buries all the way to the brass. Very, very worn.

I've bought a few milsurps, but that's the first I've seen that's this worn out.

If only I had some way to record the number of tumbles the bullet made before impact, I could make a game out of it. A triple gainer!!

I had a Chinese Type 53 Mosin that had a bore just like that. It didn't tumble, but 6-8 MOA was a very good day for that rifle.
