I found a beautiful old Mossberg 195 bolt action shotgun at my LGS today. It is in excellent condition with just a few small stock dings and almost perfect bluing. Since they were only asking $90 for it I let it follow me home. The only problem is that it steadfastly refuses to feed the first shell from the magazine into the chamber. If only one shell is loaded that will feed just fine and it otherwise loads and ejects with no problem. Has anyone had similar issues with this model of shotgun and any ideas for a fix IMG_0529.JPG ?

Make sure you are loading the magazine properly. If the rim of the last shell loaded gets caught behind the shell below it, it will not feed. That's the only thing I can think of that could be causing this. I hope this makes sense.

Those old box magazines were infamous in all gauges. If a lip gets bent you have problems. I would either buy another one (that's guaranteed ! ) or figure out how to fix yours. If you ever have a round that doesn't sound right, make sure nothing is caught in those vent slots in the barrel.

The mag springs in those were weak when they were new, and now are 50+ years old. I have fixed several of them by replacing the original leaf spring with a coil spring cut down from an AR mag, and bent to fit.

How do you get into the magazine? I can't see any way to remove the follower and spring without bending something.

I figured out how to remove the follower and spring (just press the front of the follower down until you can pull the back up and out) and found that the spring was broken on the bottom. I have ordered a new magazine and will look for a new spring so I can have two good mags.
