so, i sold a long gun to some one in another state. he will send a sighned ffl coppy with payment. how do i go about shipping.

Go to the post office and be prepared to have to wait for an hour trying to mail it because they will swear up and down that they cannot ship long arms and you will have to wait till they call some other post office to ask and then look at the rules and realize that they can. They will then try and fool you with the section that says that you have to be dealer to ship handguns, this does not apply to longarms.

Maybe you will be lucky and have a post office that knows the rules (note mine) and will make shipping a breeze. Make sure you bring a signed affidavit saying the longarm that you are shipping is unloaded or they can open the package and inspect the longarm to insure that it is unloaded.

Ask how I know this

UPS is cheaper for packages over several pounds. I shipped one this week for the first time, it was $14 with insurance for my package and took all of 2 minutes in the store. USPS would have been $18 without insurance and they are said to be likely to unpack to varify contents. UPS is in an out.

Wrap your rifle up securely in a box.

Take it to the post office.

Mail as normal.

You do not have to declare it's a firearm if you are shipping it to an FFL.

Folks who volunteer they are shipping a long gun, volunteer their time in explaining the laws.

P.S. I'd also verify the FFL number at the EzCheck website. Any fool with photoshop today can make their own license (and do).
