I realize that there are numerous threads on this forum and others about upgrading MAK-90's, however mine has a little different problem.

The top picture shows what my rifle currently looks like. I've just added the galil hand guard and I'd eventually like to switch out the trigger, and add a black Tapco pistol grip and a standard wood butt stock.

The second picture shows the cut of the receiver. I just want to make sure what type of cut it is before I order anything. This is an angle cut correct?

The third picture shows my problem in adding a standard butt stock. I'm not sure how common it is for MAK's to have a back plate welded on but mine does (see bottom of post for the story behind the weld for those that care). By looking at the welds, does anyone know if I could carefully break them myself to take the plate out, or should I contact a welder, or should I leave it alone for safety sake?

I had sold this rifle to a friend a few years ago and upon his stripping it down discovered that the "back plate" was loose. He thought it could be a safety issue so I gave him his check back and he gave me the rifle. My friend recommended I contact a welder to have the plate welded back on. Not realizing it could be my opportunity to change out stocks, I had it welded back on. My friend didn't want the rifle anymore as he was only going to trade it for some work done to his house and the opportunity for him had passed. So I've been looking at the rifle for a while wanting to spruce it up.

Thanks for any and all help.

That's definitely angled. My Norinco AK is perpendicular.

I'm not super familiar with the back plate on AK's. I've only had my stock off once to swap out the annoying thumbhole stock. I don't recall there being a plate there at all. In fact the normal stock I put on it just slides right into the receiver.

looks to be angle cut to me. my WASR-10 is most definatly a different angle than your rifle. as far as the plate in the back, I would immagine that carefully trimming it out to fit the new stock would be fine.

Yeah, an hour with a dremel and some patience ought to remove the back plate.

AK experts, what's this plate for?

I wonder if someone welded a plate on, and perhaps even cut the receiver. Maybe not.

My Mak-90 has an open receiver, and is square cut. The Mak-90 thumbhole stock does not go up in the receiver.

Either way, a little dremel time and it can be removed. Finding a stock to fit that angled receiver may be a trick.

I bought a stock set back when I converted my Mak-90 from Davids Collectibles. They do not have that set any more, and I don't see anything that would fit yours.

Copes has a nice set now, but it is for square cut as well.

Oh yea, the new stock will go up in the receiver fairly tight and provide any support lost from removing the plate, and besides, most AK's don't have them anyway.

Ironwood Designs is said to have sets for angled receivers.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have seen Iron wood designs and they do have angled stocks. I think perhaps I could email them with a pic of my receiver before ordering to see if it'd be okay. I see Tapco just came out with a wood set company but I don't think they sell just the butt stock by itself yet. Thanks for answering my questions guys.
