Hey guys, came across an old surface rusted 760 30-06 for a song and a dance. The stock and forend are beat and need replacements. Planning on putting synthetic furniture and chopping the barrel to 16.5 inches.

What has to be done to make the synthetic forend fit this rifle? It was built in '54...

The furniture from the 20 gauge 870 is suppose to fit the 7600's. If mine wasn't in such good shape I would be looking at something like that. I'm not sure about the 760's but it sounds like you're on the road to having a great survival rifle.

What are you doing for mags? I'd be interested to know myself; have some 10-rd'ers that needed some dremelling but if there's others that come ready to go even better.

Will 7600 mags work in a 760? I have a 760 in .35 Remington. Always wanted another mag for it.

"...chopping the barrel to 16.5 inches..." Don't. You'll lose too much velocity and the muzzle blast, flash and noise will be astounding.
Surface rust will come off with 0000 steel wool and a bit of oil. A light touch with a fine, brass wire, wheel in a bench grider is faster though. Eye protection is mandatory.
Most synthetic stocks need a bit of fitting, but nothing serious.
"...have a 760 in .35 Remington..." Gunparts. 10 rounders at $22.80 each. $25.70 for .243/.308/.300 Sav 10 rounders.

Eagles are the clear plastic ones? They look brittle.

Sunray, where is that?

Any info folks have on interchangeability with mags marked 760 or 7600 would be great. Thanks!

well aware of the velocity loss. This is going to be a sub 300 yard gun loaded with 180 grain pills. It should still spit them out faster then 2500 FPS even with the short barrel, I plan on using a faster powder to reduce blast...

Was only planning on using 4 round remington mags, but if someone has a suggestion for a good 10, let me know!

I agree, they do look brittle, but his does feed all 10 rounds consistently. The triple K mags look much sturdier but they see to be hit or miss from a QC standpoint.

I did that to a .308 760 but had the barrel cut to 18 inches and Williams fire sights installed. I ordered a composite stock set, don't remember the brand, so they're available. The rifle was 1974 vintage as I recall.

Try one 10 rnd magazine before you buy a bunch of them. The 10 rnd magazine interfered with cycling the action when my forearm hit the magazine. I could avoid that by holding out farther on the fore end but it felt awkward.

Hello friends and neighbors // KarbineKrazy -- if you want to sell the old furniture for the 1954 760, I an interested, my .35rem is also from 1954.
KarbineKrazy-----I saw a folding stock for an 870 with 760/7600 included on the list of firearms it would fit. I'll try to find it again but you might see it in your search. Look good for a project gun.

Boomie/Col. Plink-----The 760 and 7600 mags are interchangable but the 7600 was not chambered in .35rem.
The .35 Rem has a shorter feed area in the top of the mag and are rare. The last one I saw on GunBroker went for over $80.00. I am very careful with my 760 .35rem mag. ((If you find a source for these please PM me.))

The 740 and 7400 mags with the slide knob on the side will also work in the 760.
I believe the slide might be necessary to load a 740/7400 (semiauto version) so 760/7600 mags may not work in them.

HTH My 1958, .30-06, 760 is my main hunting rifle. I doubt I'll wear it out, before I wear out

18 inch 760's were a factory option at one time. You won't lose much cutting it down unless you count needing to re-do the iron sights. If you just plan on leaving it scoped it won't matter much.

760's make a handy brush or saddle gun.

PS Most steel 10 shot mags don't work very well.

BTW Karbine, great idea. The 'c'arbine-length 760's were well-received; facinating possibilities.

some hillbilly kid carved an 5 point deer head in the side of the stock and 5 Xs, presumably his kills, in the stock and forend. I could fill it and paint it, but I would rather just put some synthetic furniture on it.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but did anyone ever find .35 Remington magazines? I searched "eagle" and "gunparts" and what-not and didn't come up with anything.

Now I kind of want to cut down the barrel on mine and have peep sights put on. That would be a suh-weet light weight rifle.
