I just heard a blurb about this on the BBC. A German police spokesman answered the question on "gun availability" by sneering "it is certainly not like America; Germany has strict gun laws." Expect this to somehow be spun into "renewing the assault weapons ban."

BERLIN (Reuters) - A masked man who stormed an elementary school in the small German town of Emsdetten on Monday, firing shots and wounding people, is dead and all pupils have been cleared from the school, German police said.

A police spokesman from the nearby town of Steinfurt said a teacher, janitor and several students had been lightly wounded.

Another police spokesman from the city of Muenster said the man had an explosive device attached to his body, which experts were attempting to defuse.

Police said the man, whom German television reports identified as a former pupil, entered the building at 9.30 a.m. and immediately opened fire.

Police commando forces had control of the school. Emsdetten is a town of 35,000 near the Dutch border.

Police had blocked the website, which they said contained a note warning of his plans, by mid-afternoon.

"Based on the note, he appears to have acted out of general frustration and a feeling his life had lost all meaning," state prosecutor Wolfgang Schwer told a news conference.

"Everything suggests he was acting alone and not linked to broader extremist groups."

Good to know their "strict" gun laws are keeping are so effective at keeping school children safe.

My guess would be that the "america&guns&gunlaws" comment was ripped out of the context, more meaning that the guns are not THAT easily bought, than in America, since people usually must apply for the permit and have more paperwork. And the comment is translated into more useful (read antigun) "version".

Press example - our newspaper noted that the event took place in the North-East region of Germany, near Netherlands border. :cuss:

At least the bastard got what he deserved and took no-one other with him.

Crime is not a justification for infringing my Second Amendment rights.

If 100 schools got shot up tomorrow, I still have a God given Right to own any firearm I choose.

The debate ends right there. I concede nothing by engaging in these endless petty gun control debates with ignorant gun-grabbers who aren't interested in listening anyway. If you even debate it, you've already lost since you're allowing inalienable rights to be up for discussion or alteration. Repealing the 1st Amendment isn't up for discussion, it isn't on the table, it isn't up for debate - why should anything else be?

Buy a gun. Buy ammo. Buy family guns and ammo. Go to the range. Take your family and friends to the range. Keep it alive. That is how we win.

update: It's the fault of Video games, paintball

That's what German legislators are claiming. These are the "conservative" legislators, who are opposed on this issue by the liberal Greens!

Violent games blamed for German school attack

BERLIN (Reuters) - Leading German lawmakers demanded a crackdown on violent computer and simulated war games on Tuesday over concerns that they may have helped inspire a young man to attack his former school with guns and explosives.

The masked 18-year-old man stormed the Scholl secondary school on Monday in the western German town of Emsdetten, wounding as many as 27 people before committing suicide.

The young man, identified only as Bastian B., was known to authorities and due in court on Tuesday for weapons violations, local police said. According to German media reports, he had a fondness for war simulation and computer games.

Wolfgang Bosbach, the deputy head of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) in parliament, said it was time to consider banning games that simulate wanton killing.

"We need effective guidelines to protect children from exposure to different types of media, but we don't need (simulated) killer games that can lead to brutalisation," Bosbach was quoted on the Netzeitung news Web site as saying.

Bosbach added that scientific studies have shown violent games have disturbing effects on some children.

Christa Stewens, family minister for the conservative-led state of Bavaria, called for a nationwide ban on war games like paintball and laser tag, in which players hunt down and pretend to kill each other with guns firing paint balls or laser beams.

"The federal government must finally ban (simulated) killer games... Bavaria has had such a ban in place since 2002," Stewens said in a statement.

She added that children should also be prevented from playing violent computer games.

The federal government has so far refused to ban such games.

The opposition Greens warned against banning violent computer and war games.

Volker Beck, a leading Greens member of parliament, said it would be better to focus the debate on the proper use of computers and not jump to conclusions before it was clear what motivated Bastian B.

Is paintball really illegal in Bavaria, or only as to minors?

*** has happened to the Germans, seriously they used to be awesome!!! Come on look at how quickly they swept through poland in WWII and France, in WWI they nearly "swept" through Belgium and were several miles outside of Paris, they have totally gone soft. /german rant

I used to want to visit Europe but now honestly I see no point not even for the cultural reasons, cause all of that old culture is gone its been wiped out by socialism and there is only a skeleton remaining of the old countries.

The full article is interesting however, considering they will use it to ban video games, the problem is not the video games or the paintball guns or laser tag, the problem is a populace that does not know the difference between right and wrong or how to control themselves or what to do with their "FEELINGS" if the state does not hand out pills or spew propaganda that helps them cope. Anti gunners will read it as "OMG ANOTHER REASON TO BAN GUNS" but what they dont realize is that Germany has extremely strict gun laws and it still doesnt help.

You consided them awesome? They were pathetic then and they are pathetic now. Our allies indeed. /german rant

The Germans did a lot of wanton killing waaaay before video games. I fail to see how prohibting sales of 'puter games (won't kids just download them from the net or something) will prevent madmen. It will only create yet another uncontrollable black market.

Madmen do this because they are madmen. The cake of custom has been crumbled and thrown out as we are now all so smart. Custom kept the madmen in check, now they are free to do their evil. We must stop the madmen.

Arm the teachers, allow them to shoot back. Running and hiding and waiting to be prey is not the answer. The children at Stockton were killed because a teacher told them to lie down as she thought that Patrick Purdy was "shooting over them." Her foolishness allowed five children to be killed.

You can only stop a determined killer by killing him. Arm the teachers.

All those laws, restrictions, nannyism, and it still happens. Will the world EVER REALIZE THEY ARE PUNISHING THE WRONG PEOPLE? Laws affect only those who obey them. It's not rocket surgery.

Our police commando forces can beat up your police commando forces :p

Whether you like or dislike their ideology, the German military machine of early WW2 was the best of the best, by far superior to any of the allied troops. It was Americas economic and manufacturing ability that won WW2, not superior military action.
Awesome would be a fitting description of the German military in WW2.

Thats basically what I meant to say. German military high command did some amazing things with logistics and overall strategy. Not only that but the weapons were far superior in most cases.
