assault-style rifle.

Hey, is that a new phrase coined by FOX, ala their "homicide bomber" moniker.

Assault-STYLE, yep has a ring.

Sorry, what follows is just another boring shoot-em-up-at-work story. They do seem to be increasing in frequency, though, as we near the assault "style" weapons ban renewal.

Man Opens Fire at School Board Meeting

Friday, July 18, 2003

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Audience members attending a school board meeting were credited with thwarting an attack by a maintenance worker who doused two people with gasoline and shot another with an assault-style rifle.

One woman was wounded in the attack Thursday night but her injuries were not life-threatening, police said. Onlookers grabbed the man before he could take aim, witnesses said.

"Their quick action really did help prevent fatalities tonight," school board member John Luoni said.

Richard Dean "Rusty" Bright (search), 58, who had been on sick leave, arrived about 10 minutes into the Kanawha County (search) Board of Education's meeting with three large buckets of gasoline and a Chinese-made SKS rifle under an overcoat, witnesses said.

Luoni said Bright placed the buckets on a table and then splashed maintenance supervisor Jeffery A. Allred and Karen Williams, a personnel department official.

Bright appeared to try to ignite the gas, then pulled out the rifle, witnesses said. Luoni said Bright fired several shots, but was unable to take aim before onlookers subdued him.

Bright had in recent months complained about Allred, his supervisor, to schools Superintendent Ron Duerring, school officials told The Charleston Gazette. They said they thought the matter had been resolved.

Police Chief Jerry Pauley said Bright was talking to investigators, but declined to suggest a motive or say whether Bright had selected specific targets.

"We're assuming he's a disgruntled employee," Pauley said.

Bright, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment. He was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail and was scheduled for a July 25 court hearing.

School employer Karen Taylor, 56, was shot in the lower abdomen. She was under evaluation at Charleston (search) Area Medical Center early Friday. Pauley said her injury was not life-threatening.

Board meetings often attract more than 100 people during the school year, but only about 20 attended Thursday's session.

"Some of the people just hit the floor, others just got out of the room" when the attack began, said board President William Raglin, who also praised the quick-acting audience members.

"You don't know why you do things when you have to do it," he said.

Edit: spelling- again.

"We're assuming he's a disgruntled employee," Pauley said.

Doh!

Seems to be more and more of that as of late. Sure seems to attract news stories at timely junctions w/ pending legislation, neh?

Adios

At least the people at that meeting had the gumption do subdue him not just sit there and be slautered. My hat is off to them and I hope more Sheeple realize that they are not helpless vitcims unles they choose to be.

If you worked for the School Board; would YOU be disgruntled?

Gasoline huh? Let's ban that..

Let's ban killing... oh, wait, we have, and it doesn't really help prevent the loonies..

<yawn> notice the downplay on the more serious gasoline, vs. guns..

Gasoline, I can kill thousands by starting fires... very difficult to kill thousands with a gun.

"Bright, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment."

Why isn't he being charged with attempted murder? Just throwing gasoline on someone and lighting a match should get him attempted murder, let alone shooting someone.

Employers might wanna try hiring gruntled employees instead od disgrunted ones.

So now are we going to hear calls to ban gasoline and buckets?
Of course not, but I'm wondering how long it will be before I can no longer take my SKS "assault-style" rifle out of the safe....

too bad thirty or so armed citizens didn't ventilate him on the spot

I realize that its verboten on school grounds

this story perfectly illustrates why we should never allow politicians to decide when and where we can defend ourselves.

what would you be thinking if you were one of the audience? "damn glad i obeyed the ccw law"

Don't be so hard on FOXNews about "assault-style" rifle. At least it had the initiative to describe reality instead of pushing some agenda.

Second Amendment War is a war over definitions. FOXNews actions throws out one small hinderance countering the Big Media stanpede.

You might drop 'em a thank you.

Don't be so hard on FOXNews

Actually I agree with you and did not intend to criticize FNC. I liked that they started using "homicide bomber" and I think "assault style" is right up there with it.

Below is copy of email I sent FOX:

I'd like to congratulate and thank FNC for taking the initiative to use the correct designation of "assault-style" rifle in the report:

Much like your effort to buck the "mainstream" media's unanimous use of "suicide bomber" in favor of "homicide bomber", "assault-style" is more exactly to the point and tears away the Politically Correct and politically charged misrepresentation of ordinary firearms that only appear more menacing than other firearms. I hope that FNC will continue to try to present facts rather than manipulate the public- this will become more important regarding firearms as the 2004 sunset of the so-called "assault weapons" ban is more hotly debated.

Thanks again.
