I have a Rem 7400 I have had for about 10 years. I thought it was made in the 80s due to it having the high deep gloss finish. I pulled the front stock off and the letters are DA. So if it were that time frame it would be Sept of 80. But this model did not start till 81. The next A date is 2003. Could be but I thought that Rem. stopped making the high deep gloss finish and went to the mat finish or plastic by then. Any help appreciated.

September of 1980 is what it is.

Probably the earliest run of 7400s made pre-model year just like automobiles. Or 1981 is just when Remington announced the 7400 would be released but started making them in late 1980.

This is what I am hoping for, but Remington says that they did not produce the 7400 till 81 is this an over lap?

OK I called Remington they were very helpful. So the two letters on the barrel is not accurate for telling when the rifle was made. That is only a Barrel date code. So my Rem dates to 1981. This is in the first production lot. Thanks for the help.

Barrels and actions are made at different times before being assembled into guns. The barrel may have been made in 1980 but the rifle may not have been assembled until later. Actually being that close is pretty good. It isn't unusual for parts to sit in storage for years before being assembled into firearms.

Many times when you see short limited runs of something unusual. It is done during a slow time at the factory when they start pulling extra inventory and putting together rifles in rare or unusual configurations.
