I have a 1906 vintage Marlin model 1897 that I had relined by a highly recommended gunsmith few months ago. The original problem was the chamber was erroded to where it wouldn't extract, but it was surprisingly accurate.
After considerations, I decided to have it relined using a TJ hammer forged liner for 22LR. Also recommended was to have a 39A bolt fitted at the same time, which I had sent direct from Dick Williams Gun Shop to the gunsmith doing the work. I was told 39A bolts are better steel and suited for HV 22's that are or were available. The gunsmith said he installed the liner using Red Lok-Tite.
The first time I got it back from the gunsmith it wouldn't group very good at 50' NRA target, 2" groups from a bench rest and peep sights. Also the cases were bulging at the rim, the firing pin was peircing the rims, and the new 39A bolt didn't fit very well. Occasionally a bullet will key hole at 50' ! Groups measure 2" to 5" inches at 50'. When I do get two touching those are flyers.
Sent it back.:banghead:
Second time I got it back and fired it once ..........and no good still.
I did a chamber cast with cerrosafe, and the first 1 1/2" of muzzle. Measurements show it to be on the money. Retrieved 3 bullets fired into a drum of water and they mike .2225"
The fired cases still look bulgy at the rim and bolt face.
I asked for a 11 degree crown but never got one. There is a crown but it is not 11 degrees, much steeper then that.
Any ideas of what to look for would be appreciated ??
I have had good luck with two other relines but that man retired. One was a 1873 Winchester, the other a 1881 Marlin.
I would like to get the old girl shooting nice again.
