The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive how the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation*- George Washington

Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth-George Washington

I've been told that my 1974 Marlin 30-30( win) has a Savage stamp please advise, as to its meaning. Thanks in advance.

It is the proof mark of an original Marlin. "J"ohn "M"arlin.
When Remington bought Marlin they started proofing with a "REM" on the right side of the barrel. They are commonly known as "Remlins" and not thought of very highly from a quality standpoint.

Unfortunately the general opinion is that the decline in quality of Marlin rifles after the Remington takeover is just like the decline in quality of Winchester rifles after the Olin Corp. takeover in the 1960s. Do note after consumer complaints Winchester quality improved, but for many it was too late.

I have JM and "North Haven" stamped Marlins (.22 39A Mountie, two .22 Model 60s, and .30-30 336W) so I doubt if I will ever have to test "Remlin" quality.

John Marlin was a Colt employee who founded his own gun company in 1870; he made revolvers and derringers at first, and knew how to attract and keep good engineers, and went on to make rifles and shotguns. The 336 is the direct descendent of the Model 1893, and the 39 is the direct descendent of the Model 1891.

Keep that "JM" stamped Marlin in the family.

Thanks for the knowledge.

What kind of scope( in a 3Xto4X )is reliable and affordable for short distance. I am a combat injured Veteran and my eyesight is horrible and I have a partialy paralyzed leg and will probably brush hunt this year, so I'd love to have a decent and affordable optic, as would love to put some so meat on my freezer . I'm sorry I just noticed I duplicated my response.

Fear

Socialists and thier respective artisans fail to remember some of us didn't forget WWII social and human rights atrocities, so we will refuse to surrender our 2ND amendment rights.

I have 3 Marlins with the JM stamp and 1 made after Remington took them over. I will never buy another new Marlin but will continue to look for the old Marlins stamp JM.
The older Marlin are quality firearms, the new ones have lost the Marlin quality.
