Hi guys,

I was wondering if you guys could fill me on the past and present abbreviations that Marlin uses for their model 336. Current ones are C, W, XLR, SS for Walnut, Hardwood, Laminate, Stainless Steel.

I have also come across A, RC, and a few others. Could you guys help me out with all the abbreviations for this rifle?

Also, is there any difference with the regular rifling and microgroove rifling in the 336's?

The A was origionally for the longer barreled rifle version. For a while they made an A that was identical to the W except it had a rifles endcap instead of the carbines barrel band.

T is for Texan, the straight grip version

D was for the 18.5" blue ported barrel guide gun in 35 rem.

LTD is the 18.5" stainless un ported guide gun in 35 rem.

LTS is the 16.25 " straight grip Trapper very similar to the Maurader.

Thought of a few more.

Y is the Spikehorn. Essentially a C model with a short 16.25" barrel and a short youth stock.

SC Sporting Carbine. Just an older designation for what we call the C today.

I'm pretty sure that when they first came out with the crossbolt safety they called the C, a model CS for a few years to designate that it had a safety.

TK was a special run for K-mart. Straight grip, hardwood with a 20" barrel and a half magazine tube.

I'm sure there are others.

What hardwood do they use on the 336W? Is it birch? I wish marlin would make a tactical version of the 336 with composit stock, sling, picatinny rail for scope mount, 20" barrel, in .357 mag, .44 Mag, 30-30 Win, and 45-70 and other available goodies. it also needs to be a short-stroke lever action for speed.

A factory Appalachian Assault rifle. It is not too hard to set them up that way. Someone used to offer a cheap plastic stock but I've also seen guys just paint the wood with a black textured paint to get the same effect.

To get the short lever throw it would have to be one of the pistol calibers. Someday I play on setting up one of mine that way although I will probably leave the walnut stock as is.
