Can't never go wrong with a 30-30 lever action. Marlin is a good rifle to have. I have one with a little more power but about the same kick as the 30-30. Its a 35 remington and bullets at walmart for this caliber is the same as the 30-30. Just a matter of preference. The 35 remington is good for black bear as well.

Another fan of the 336 line here, I have the 336C and it is a dream to shoot. Quite accurate too. I got the mount to put a scout scope on it just haven't gotten around to it yet. You won't be disappointed with it.

The 336C can be had from WalMart (ordered) for about $450. I was torn between a 30-30 or a .35Rem, so I tossed a coin, nudging it a little so it would land on the .35. It did.....
