Marlin Goose Gun

I treated myself to an early Christmas present today. I bought a Marlin Super Goose 10. It is a 10-gauge bolt-action shotgun with a 34" barrel and detachable magazine. I assume they are no longer made. Does anyone have any experience with them? How many rounds does the magazine hold? I bought it mostly because I love big-bore guns and I cannot go any bigger with rifles. What kind of power do 10-gauge slugs have? There is a junkyard nearby and it would be fun to disable old cars with one.

Any possible self-defense uses?

Decent utility shotgun, IIRC the mag holds two.

10 gauge slugs pack lots of power. But...

For the usual loads, the thing is a bit on the light side. You probably will not get whiplash shooting it, but nosebleeds and a flinch are probable.

As for self defense, it's better than fang and claw, but far from optimum.

Used one once on a guided goose hunt

Problem was, I was 13 and wouldn't listen to reason. That first trigger pull learned me something. For one thing, don't hold you cheek so tight on the stock. I thought I had lost a tooth. After that I was flinching so bad I don't think I even hit the same sky they were flying in.

way many years ago my buddy got a Marlin Goose Gun In 10 ga and IIRC is was as Dave stated 2 shot in the mag. Now where I'm clouded is this gun I would swear had a 36" bbl and weighed 10 or 11# 's. Factory nice recoil pad.I was smaller back them and even with the 10 ga goose load of the day the recoil was ..."soft". Suprised the heck out us. I stood behind him just knowing I'd keep him from falling on his rear, nah. I tried it and honest this thing had less recoil than 1100 12 ga. Yes were sober.

Then again I was young, and perceptions and memory change as the years go by.

They made a few different models

all based on their model 50 action. My books list "goose guns" in both 3 inch 12g and 3.5inch 10g with 34 or 36 inch full choked barrels, manufactured between 1962 and 1985, but I'm sure the 12g at least was produced later than that. I've always had a fondness for bolt action shotguns. Hunted many a deer with a Mossberg 20g, and I've never seen my dad hunt anything with a shotgun other than his .410. But that 10 g is not for this boy. If I can't anchor it with a good stout 3'' 12, I ain't interested.

So I did recall the 36" bbl correctly. Does you source give gun weights? Long bbl, heavy, real nice Kick-Eez type recoil pad , 10 ga for sure, don't recall the load of the day for goose. Still recall how surprised as to how soft the recoil was. Interesting.

I have shot 10 ga in other platforms, like single bbls and oh yeah...I do remember the recoil. < shudder, rub jaw> yep...I do remember!

Neat guns, interesting . I have shot the 12 ga with skeet loads a fella brought out , sentimental deal , a gun he used as a kid. Neat gun indeed.

Nothing about weights. I remember the one I shot as being pretty heavy, but like I said, I was 13 and that gun didn't fit me at all.

Duh? I finally had the part of age 13 sink in, no wonder the darn thing didn't fit. I was older, the term adult is applied , but actually I never grew up--just got bigger.

You do make two good points that bears repeating. 1) Gun fit , 2) Guns to fit the shooter. Be it age, gender, stature....etc. I know we had limits on guns in growing up and "made do", there are too many choices for 13 yr olds now-a-days. Ill- fit , recoils turns off and discourages more new shooters than anything.

What's sad, is that my arms haven't grown that much since then. I still have a heck of a time finding a gun that fits, I think that's why I'm so into pistols now.

Call central supply, ask for the "arm stretcher"...probably in the ortho bin,then again could be in with plaster /fiberglass supplies for casts...knowing how central supply "organizes and catagorizes" supplies.

I never did figure out why when in the OR and OR supply was out of 28 Right French the darn thing and a 32 French straight chest tubes was in with the foley's.

I'd save the tubes when could. Kids used the 28 RF for toy rifles, the 32 S for swords. Kids have a right to play army and all. So it drove the nurses upstairs nuts...I was a hit with the kids.

The Blue Book lists the 12 ga. M55 at 8 pounds, 36" barrel, and made from '62-'96.

Model 55 GDL: similar to M55 except w/ black Rynite synthetic stock. No weight listed. Made from '97-'00.

The 3.5" 10 ga. Model 5510 is listed at 10.5 pounds with a 34" barrel. Made from '76-'85.

The '67 Shooters Bible lists the 12 ga. Goose Gun at 'approximately' 7.25 pounds.

Goose and Deer Hunting

Back in 1977 I purchased my original super goose 10. I live in Ontario and hunt geese and deer with it here, I also take it with me when I hunt in Manitoba and Saskatchewan where the Great Canadian Honkers fly. Lots of fun. I'm getting ready to go deer hunting next week in Bancroft Ont. I have had lots of very memorable deer hunts over the years with this shotgun. When hunting geese I take along an extra clip in case I need a couple more shots in a hurry. I use slugs for the deer and SSG 000 for the big geese.

A relatively light-weight 10 gauge, bolt-action shotgun having an almost three foot long barrel sounds like a gift more apropos for Halloween than Christmas.

An interesting firearm nonetheless.

Bolt action shotguns are cool, and can be found cheap, sometimes. I went to local Gander Mountain last year, a place I almost never spend any money at, due to their high prices.
I was looking at their used gun rack on the sales floor, when I spotted a like-new Mossberg 12ga bolt gun...Looked at the price tag, and it was $65!! Seriously like new, not a mark on it.
I have it in the safe right now, adjustable choke and all. Someday, I will find a use for it, but at $65, I couldn't resist. Probably the only firearm i will ever buy from Gander Mountain.

Invited to a dove hunt over milo feilds, a freind and I were having a hoot of a time and we were taking a break to give the shoulder a rest , while sitting there shootin' the breeze we kept hearing some one over the other end of the feild shooting what we thought was a loud single barrel, my freind commented that he hadn't doubled but had knocked down quite a few as he saw the birds drop in the area where the loud gun was sitting.

It became to dark to shoot any more, so we threw the birds into our buckets and picked up the empties, and headed back to the house to thank the owner, on the way the loud gun came out of the stalks and walked back with us.

He was shooting a Marlin 10ga bolt action goose gun with his own reloads.

New guys always dig up the old threads. LOL Welcome to Tukto. I have a friend that bought a 34" super goose 10. I fired a steel shot load through it, wasn't any worse than my H&R 10 gauge as I recall. My buddy had a 12 gauge 36" barrel when I was a kid. he was always accidentally hitting me in the back of the head with the thing in a tight blind.

000 buck for geese, is THAT what you're sayin'? I shoot steel Ts and they are deadly. If I could use lead, I'd be happy with a 12 gauge 3" and BB shot. Ts are about 19 or 20 caliber IIRC, just below 4 buck in size. Only need to go that big because they have to be steel down here. Those old Marlins are usually full choked and I doubt they'd be steel compatible even if you cut the barrel down and had it threaded for for choke tubes. For now, I'll shoot my H&R, at least until I can afford a BPS 10.
