Does anyone know what year exactly MD started the 7 day waiting period for handgun purchases?
Does anyone have any personal experience and remembered when it took place or can anyone provide a link to answer my question?

I keep finding the date of 1966 is when MD started the 7 day wait, but I swear I remember in the mid to late 80's is when the law took effect.

No clue, but I know they also now require a "medical release" allowing the state police to browse through all of your medical records. Thankfully I moved out of that state.

I bought a pistol in 1968 in Maryland and had to wait then. Streebees in Coral Hills, Prince Georges County. Just when the week was up MLK was shot and all hell broke loose. Had to wait some more because all gun shops were closed and guarded due to riots in D.C.

I think that it is a dumb law. I have a friend that lives in MD that has quite a few handguns. Still he is limited to one a month, and has to wait at least a week every time he buys a new one. Once you have more than two what difference does it make?

Another comment on the stupidity of it. You can submit an application to the MSP to become a "collector" and that limit goes away anyways. The application is really trivial. Just notarize, submit, and wait. Not to mention you can actually get exemptions if you get a "deal" from a shop. I actually did that, I bought a Glock 19 and a Ruger Mark II at the same time and the dealer said it was a deal and the MSP approved it.

I have the collector status thing, but I still have to wait the usual 10 days to two weeks for the state police to get off their duffs and get things done.

My first handgun purchase was in 1978 and I remember submitting the paperwork then.

I too am a collector. The benefits of being recognized as a collector are that you are exempt from the one regulated firearm per month rule and transportation of regulated firearms are slightly more relaxed. As a collector, you are still bound by the wait period, which BTW is only seven days. If the MSP have not sent the FFL a disapproval or a hold on the application, after the seven day wait the FFL can release the firearm to you. I have had this happen a few times.
