I was at the Lew Horton Dist. SIte drooling on the
S&W MOdel 25 3" I would like, but on the front page
they were advertising they had a cache of Mauser 98K
that have been in storage for 60 years

Various different lots from the mid/late 30s to
the 1940s. I know the further into the war, most likely
the more shortcuts in manufacture.... but anyone have an
idea on what a 1938'ish made 98K would be priced at?

The website is Lew Horton Distributors

scrolling down I found a K98 Mausers - refinished
but retaining German Markings and stored for 60 years.
Click the link and it has a long list of

Code Manufacturer, Prod. Years Avail.
--------------------------------------
and the first listed is
S/42 Mauser Oberndorf 1936, 1937
and there's 15 more listed then there's
a line across the page and it listed a
bunch more models of other than German
K98 example a Czech model, etc.

no prices listed it says contact us.

Just guessing, but when I see "refinished" I think russian capture.

That being said, I paid $275 recently for a nice Russian capture K98. (FWIW)

AIM Surplus had them in the low $200's last time I checked. (add in the FFL transfer and s/h and you're probably a bit north of $250)

Regards,
Dave

Personally, I'll pay more for a Russian Capture that has not been refinished, than I will for one that has been "restored". I consider this process of removing the last 60 years of history from the rifle about on par with sporterizing/bubba-izing

While I agree with what you're saying and would pay the same, it's a matter of perspective I guess. A Russian capture K98 has the history of being carried by a german soldier into a russian winter and all that it entails! :) It's the same as wondering what happened to cause each ding/dent on a CMP Garand.

Have a good one,
Dave

I paid $254 for my All markings intact,1942 at Berlin-Lubecker (DUV code), excelent condition k98 from SOG about 6 months ago.Several mauser nuts from a couple forums I posted pics and info on seem to think it may actally have been a rifle given to Romainian troops after Germany conquered them early in he war, as opposed to a Russian capture.I cant say either way personally though, as I'm not that knowledgeble about Mausers, but all the tell-tale sings they mentioned fit, whereas some of the RC signs werent there. If true, it's a heck of a deal though, as I'm told they go for about $400 to Mauser collectors, as there arent all that many of them compared to orignal German or Russian capture ones, and they are anothe different variation they like to have. One guy actually did offer me $400 for it.I passed, as If it is Roainian, thats pretty cool that I have a more unusual example for my collection (espcially since I did have to pay the premium price for it :)), so I want to keep it.Kind of neat though.Shoots great, looks great.
