I just purchachased a russian captured K98 and I am having problems with the safety. When the bolt is cocked, the safety moves from left to right with out any effort (like a free fall). With the safety engaged, I pull the trigger and the cocking piece moves forward a little but does not fire however, after pulling the trigger and then moving the safety to the fire position (now there is pressure on the safety), the cocking piece falls and will discharge the round. Bad safety, cocking piece, etc?

Either the safety or the cocking piece or both need to be replaced. They work in concert with the sear. If you strip the bolt, you may be able to see if the cocking piece has been ground or otherwise monkeyed with. Replacement parts are not hard to come by.

what he said. chances are the safety lever has excessive wear. It's the cheaper easier replacement, it's also not hardend like the cocking piece is. Replacing the safety lever should resolve the problem. you can get one from brownelles.

More then likely neither the cocking piece or the safety is worn out.

More then likely, the rifle is a Russian parts gun, and it didn't work right to start with.

Your best chance is to replace the trigger sear and see if that takes care of the problem.

It sound's like the cocking piece is being held too far back by the sear, or there would be slight pressure on the safety as it pulls the striker further back off the sear to go on safe.

If that condetion is met, there is no way the rifle can fire after the trigger has been pulled and then the safety released.

Thank you all for the replies. After disaseembly of the bolt, (I did not see anything wrong) I brought the rifle to my gunsmith. After replacing the safety and trigger w/sear, the rifle function perfectly. The gunsmith said the safety was badly worn and the trigger/sear was not aligned...definatly had many mismatched parts.
