I know it's a bit off-topic, but I agree with Mike Venturino. The M1903A3 Springfield is the best of the wartime bolt actions -- or at least the best shooting rifle.

Were I to compare a Mauser and Enfield, I would include a Springfield in the Mauser mix - even if there are some differences. A 1903a3 is one of the best shooters of the war for sure, eclipsed by the Garand. Had it been WWI, it would have certainly been the best individual arm issued by any force.

The 03A3 is the rifle we should have produced in 1903. The worst feature of the M1903 was the sights -- which were elaborate and expensive to make, and poorly suited for combat.

That was one of the real advantages the M1917 had over the 1903 in WWI was the rear-positioned aperture sights.

Amen -- which is why our NEXT rifle, the M1 Garand had aperture sights -- which at least one writer has called, "the best iron sights ever put on any military rifle."
