Max .223 range

I'm not talking maximum effective range for bringing game down or anything like that, but rather what is the maximum paper punching range of the .223? I know at 300-400 yards it does very well, but what about 500+?

The furthest shot Ive made with one was 600 meters(660 yards) know Idea on max range though its a tiny bullet and fly far I like to call it the .22 on steroids.

you've got to know how to read the wind, but 80 and 90 grainers will still be supersonic at 1000.

You can do 1000, but most guys seem to like it for 600, with 62 to 75 grainers, which is more common, and can fit through your mags so you don't have to load them 1 at a time.

I'm shooting 77g SMKs out of a Savage with a 1-7 twist @ 500. It's fine. And fun. I don't think 600 would be a big deal, especially since that is the standard high power distance. You could do it at 1000, but you'd better be good.

An 80 grain boattail seated long and loaded single shot for slowfire prone at 600 yards pretty much rules the Highpower Service Rifle game. If you want to play Designated Marksman, a 77 gr at magazine length ain't bad.

A 90 grain .223 in a fast twist barrel has about the same trajectory and windage as a 175 gr .308; and is fun at 1000, if your target tender in the pit doesn't mind looking for the little bitty holes. Some folks find that difficult, resulting in slow pit service, so I just shoot the .308 at 1000 and save the .223 for 600 where there are plenty of others and nobody complains.
