Hello,
I gotten myself confused, not hard. Will the Buffalo Bore and Garrett type high power loads in .45 LC be safe in the Ruger Blackhawk? Or should they only be used in the Super Blackhawk? Thanks for any info.

The heavy .45 Colt loads would not be safe in a Super Blackhawk....just beating them into the .44 S&W Magnum chamber might set one off...they should just drop right in a Blackhawk or old-style Vaquero chambered for .45 Colt.

The Super Blackhawk, Blackhawk, and original Vaquero all have the same frame size.
I never heard of a S&W 44 Magnum... just a 44 Remington Magnum. :neener:

It's a smart a$$ kinda morning.

Howdy and thanks to all. I'm assuming now that the Super Blackhawk is only chamber for the .44 Magnum cartridge. And yes it is!

That was just a test to see if there was anyone in this thread who knew anything about guns......that's my story, and I'm sticking with it (wink)....

Buffalo Bore says:

"These Heavy .45 Colt +P loads are safe in all LARGE FRAME Ruger revolvers.
(includes Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, all pre-2005 Vaquero, Bisley, Redhawk)"

I don't have a .45LC Blackhawk, though. Certainly, the .44's do have thicker cylinder walls, but it's probably safe to assume that you won't be using super-hot .45LC loads at $66/box for high-volume plinking.:) I.e., your wallet will give out long before the Ruger would.

Wow, at that price I better get one with an interchangeable 45 ACP Cylinder! Thanks for the link and information.

Well, regular .45LC isn't that expensive. Just the super-hot hunting ammo sold by Buffalo Bore et al. Some rifle ammo can go for upwards of 100 bucks for a box of 20, but it, too, is specialized hunting ammo, not something you'd use to shoot cans at the abandoned quarry.

A reloading press and dies are a hell of a lot cheaper and long term will save you a lot more money.:) Of course, then you'll want a mold and a furnace and..........., but it'll let you shoot a lot more, especially in .45 Colt. I can reload a box of range scrap cast 255 Lee flat points for less than 3 dollars a fifty round box. There's .22LR ammo that's more expensive.

I've shot both Buffalo Bore and Double Tap loads from my BlackHawk and found them to be very stout indeed. Double Tap proved most accurate while Buffalo Bore proved to be the hardest to hold onto. Me thinks there is probably a direct correlation! :)

Ruger DID release a "SuperBlackhawk" (labeled as such) in 45LC. It's the "Hunter" variant...

Sure did - got one myself. they offered them in both plow handle and Bisley configurations along with like models in .41 magnum as well. they were made for and distributed for Lipsey's and Davidson's respectfully.

Super Blackhawk?

Super Blackhawk nuts! I have a Raging Bull in 45 Colt. You read that right, it's chambered for 45 Colt, not 454 Casull. Has six holes. Next question: How hot a load can it handle?

Buffalo Bore is okay in Blackhawk/Superblackhawks. I wouldn't suggest Garrett cartridges in your 45 colt though since Garrett only makes 45-70 and 44 Magnum. Would be bad.

Yep, and early Vaqueros were still frame-stamped "Blackhawk"...but we all know the SBH is normally considered Ruger's .44 REMINGTON Magnum flagship, and that a Vaquero is not a Blackhawk.....but I gotta watch myself around some of you triv masters, as you DO know your stuff.

Sounds like I'd do o.k. with the Blackhawk. Reloading unfortunately is not an option at this time. Love single actions.

You can buy everything equipment-wise you need to reload mild to wild .45 Colt for under $70 at 1bx/hr rate....and you'll pay under $5/bx for those handloads...start handloading.

A stainless Blackhawk in 45LC and a SuperBlackhawk in 44Mag (5.5" or less barrel) are damn near the same gun in every respect - heft, strength, weight, etc. Only the hammer would be a visual clue as to the difference and that's an easy swap.

Blue Blackhawks usually had the lighter aluminum grip giving them a real difference in recoil control. But again, that can be swapped too. The core frame (and basic strength) is identical with all post-1973 Blackhawks/Supers and "Old Vaqueros". I tend to call this the "44Magnum-class frame".

WITH ONE EXCEPTION: the 50th Anniversary Blackhawk 357 is built on the same "mid frame" as the New Vaquero. I sometimes call this the "357 frame" as that was the first caliber that frame size was chambered in. When set up in 45LC, either a NewVaq or a modified 50th 357, you can't run the 45LC+P mega-loads.
