My husband and I were talking holidays and presents for various family members while updating the list of guns/serial numbers that we keep in the safe deposit box.

A few weeks ago a friend had asked if we wanted to go shares on one of those crates of Mosin-Nagants which are so inexpensive right now. We decided that we didn't need 1/3 of a crate of the same rifle.

We have a Mosin carbine which no one in the house likes to shoot because they say that the kick is too painful (I haven't shot it yet). I've read so many people here singing the praises of their full-size Mosin's that I was wondering if we should get just one of them -- since they're so inexpensive at the moment.

I realize that, this being a gun forum, the obvious answer is "Of course you need one. Everyone needs at least one."

Seriously, though, are the full-size ones more comfortable to shoot?

:)It's going to kick anyway you slice it, everyone is a little different when it comes to perceived recoil felt buy the shooter. I will suggest getting one, but I will also suggest finding a recoil pad or something and try that to see if it makes it more enjoyable to shoot.

Yes, I've found them more comfortable to shoot than the M44s/M38 I've tried, that said it still has some kick...so don't expect 5.56/5.45/.22 recoil. In general, they seem to be one of the best bangs for your buck out there today. I have one 91/30 already but have been considering adding a second (or maybe adding one of the carbines to my collection instead of shooting my buddies). So yes, I'd say give it a whirl. Since you already have a carbine, it sounds like you have ammo kicking around, so you'd only have the less than $100 sunk in the rifle, so go for it. I hope you enjoy it!

I'm in no way a purist on originality when it comes to a rifle which I intend to shoot. Were I to buy a rifle which is inexpensive but is heavy on recoil, I'd factor in the cost of something like a Limbsaver recoil pad, knowing that I'd do my own installation. I would do whatever modification is needed to the length of the stock in order to have a proper fit for length of pull.
