Two Memphis seniors took matters into their own hands and fought back against burglars, and an old Smith & Wesson will forever remind retired Naval Officer Bryant Green of his Tuesday morning ordeal.

He said it all began when his doorbell rang at 10 a.m., "I got up quickly and did not see anyone."

However, his 76 year old wife Gwyneth saw four men breaking into a backyard window of their West Crestwood house.

Bryant Green came out the front door, crept around his house and into the back courtyard where he saw one of the suspects with a shotgun.

Green said he and the young man exchanged a few rounds, but no one was hurt.

Gwyneth Green said she watched from inside in mortal terror, "I could see the smoke from the shotgun the fellow had...I was trembling so I couldn't stand."

The four med fled on foot and by car.

Memphis Police used their canine unit, patrol cars and a copter to search for the men, with no luck.

Neighbor John Rindin said he wants to start a community watch, "we need to be more proactive."

At the moment, police do not have a detailed description of the burglars or the get-away car, but they might have fingerprints.

The Greens said they hold no bad feelings. They are just grateful to be alive and will not let this crime run them out of their home of 46 years.

There has been a rash of that lately down there and if the guy was a threat I don't see a problem -- there have been many cases of homeowners in the nashville area getting in shoot outs defending thier home from -- home invasions.
If the threat was warranted then there is no problem with stepping out but you need to be careful with doing so. Have to keep in a defensive mode.

I'd rather stay inside where there is cover. You know where everything is and have the upper hand if they manage to get inside. It's very likely you can get the jump on them inside since they likely won't know the layout of the house or where you could hide. Backyards are generally very open and if the badguy likely already knows the layout from being there or staking it out on an earlier excursion. You'd have to sneak around a corner and shoot before they see you. Inside, you just hide behind a couch, point at that rattling door and shoot the second you see one of them pop their head in.

Of course it's never that simple, but I feel being indoors in your own home grants you some home turf advantage.

Memphis is lost. I have a friend in Memphis. Knock on the door. He goes to the door and finds 3 drunks who try to push their way inside. He grabs shovel which they take from him. They enter house (where daughter and wife are). Friend bolts up stairs ahead of 3 drunks. Meets them coming up stairs and carefully explians to them that if their next step is up the stairs, he will perforate them profusely with the S&W .357 he now has in his hand. They flee. Police are called. Will not even persue perps as they "were let in so no B&E: they did not hit him with shovel!" He WAS told he should have shot them!

Second story from there. My son and daughter had their auto's parked side by side in a parking lot of an apt complex. Drunk hits one so hard it is knocked into the other. SO two sides of one and one side of the other is trashed. Pictures were taken (by my daughter) and pieces of the offending car were collected. Police filled out a report. The end.

If it is not a murder, the police in Memphis think it is simply standard operating procedure for the area.

I feel sorry for those of you who live there. KEEP YOUR GUN IN YOUR HAND! Holster is too slow for there.

Violent crimes have really been on the rise here in Memphis. I know the Greens, they are the kind of people you would never expect anything to happen to. Very kind and gentle people. Mrs. Green has had two heart surgeries. She hasn't been doing very well since the incident. I really wish Mr. Green would have got one or two of em'.

Well no bad guy ended up bleeding, so it's not a REALLY happy ending, but nice nevertheless!
