A recent thread on another forum about the Merwin Hulbert revolver sparked a chord in my memory.

Years ago I had a publication, a small gun book about the size of a paperback novel, but well illustrated. In this book was a photo of a Merwin Hulbert. From my very dim recollection, I remember it as an open top model, with a spur trigger, maybe ivory grips and engraved; the barrel about four inches in length. And the caption alluded to the fact that it once belonged to Mexican outlaw Juaquin Murietta, of early California fame. Never mind the fact that Juaquin was killed nearly thirty years prior to the introduction of the Merwin Hulbert revolver, even before metallic cartridges.

What I'm getting around to is this: Does anybody have a Merwin Hulbert such as I've described?

A friend has a .38 open top, spur trigger with mother of pearl grips as you describe. Just the other night, got to handle a nice 7" open top .44 square butt holster model. Personally, I would really like to find a nice 3.5" .44, top strap DA, with folding hammer spur and skull crusher grip for a shooter. They have gotten scarce. They were much more common in this area during the 1970's and 80's.

The large frame M&H revolvers are pretty pricey these days, but some of the DA revolvers and small caliber spur trigger guns are seen at most large gun shows and at on-line auctions at reasonable prices. I consider the M&H an interesting design, even though its basic selling point (ejection of only empty cases) does not always work like it was intended to, and it is impossible to obtain the correct length cartridges nowadays.

The guns were made by Hopkins and Allen, in which M&H (a marketing company) had an interest.
