Local female attains honor as Appointed Shotgun Coach

From Staff Reports

NASHVILLE — In late September, Leslie York was among a handful of women at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex in Nashville to become an NRA/USAS/CMP Appointed Shotgun Coaches.

She became the state’s first female Appointed Shotgun Coach.

York, from White Pigeon, is a staunch advocate of women in the shooting sports and the Michigan State Coordinator of the Second Amendment sisters, a national women’s advocacy group.

She is also a Hunter Safety Instructor for the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources as well as a Shotgun Instructor in Women in the Outdoors events and 4-H Shotgun Instructor.

In what has been a male-dominated sport for generations, women are making steps forward in sport shooting and proving themselves to be competitive and proficient in all aspects of the sports. These women have now pushed ahead into the professional realm of competitive shotgun shooting – Coaching.

This course of study, provided by the National Rifle Association, USA Shooting (The U.S. Olympic Shooting Team), the Civilian Marksmanship Program and being highly endorsed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Scholastic Clay Target Program, is widely recognized as the foundation and basis for competitive shotgun coaching in the United States.

These Coach candidates studied topics ranging from risk management to physics to sports psychology and physiology. Special attention was paid to course modules dealing with ethics, safety, and developing shotgun sports programs within the community.

Upon completion of the requirements of this training program, these Appointed Shotgun Coaches are entitled to go into their communities and educational environments with bona fide credentials, based on a nationally recognized and endorsed curriculum, to support their efforts to create and operate competitive shotgun sports programs. They have ventured beyond the realm of recreational shotgun coaching into the arena of the professional coach.

On Saturday, York was on hand as eleven women shooters were present for the “Ladies Day At The Range’ .22-caliber handgun shoot at the St. Joseph County Conservation Club.

There was a safety presentation for women who had never shot a gun before at 1 p.m., followed by shooting from 2-5 p.m. at the pistol range.

Ammunition was donated by On Target Gun Shop of Kalamazoo, Mike’s Gun Shop of Sturgis and Best Motor Sales, Sturgis.

The instructors included Dean Suber, Ron Adams, Dave Stedman, Larry York and Vicki Collins-Stedman.
