michigan short barrel rifle law

Jeez, does it always take this long to register? Hehehe anyway...

I figured this would be right the forum so I would like to ask, does anybody here know if it is legal to have a short barrel rifle or shotgun, or convert any long gun into a short barrel weapon in the state of michigan?

Nope. Michigan's laws dated to before the NFA, that is why I always assumed it was that way.

If you could talk your state congresscritter into legislating, I could probably talk mine into helping support it.

EDIT: Oh, any noin-NFA rifle that is under 30" must also be registered as a pistol.

The how the hell?

My neighbor bought a HK94 with a 16 inch barrel and he said he got some paper work done so he can take it to the gunsmith and shorten the barrel to look like the "real deal" being the MP5 that is. Is he doing something illegal? Because if he is......I wont tell.

By the way, he also has a .22lr Krinkov with a short barrel.

So you're saying that there is no way in hell you can EVER get a short barrel weapon in Michigan, right? Cause if it's true, that would suck BIG time. Oh well, there's always semi auto belt feds.

Actually, IIRC, C&R NFA goodies are OK. If you had the money to drop on a Thompson and had a C&R, I think you'd be OK.

From the Michigan penal code:

(k) “Short-barreled rifle†means a rifle having 1 or more barrels less than 16 inches in length or a weapon made from a rifle, whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise, if the weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches.

He just needs to make sure it's got a long stock.
