Okay all week the weather has been unseasonably warm. But by the time I get home. Too dark to shoot.

I plan on run'n some lead down range and what happens.
Weather is Wet, COLD, and windy. What few targets that don't get blown off will be the ones that are soak'n wet.

I HATE the short days of winter. Those that live farther north than ohio, WHY?

Grrr,
Snow is Gods way of say'n "you live too far from the equator"

Okay, hopefully sunday the wind will die down and I'll getta shoot m' new Rooger OA.....
Heheheheh

Yep winter sucks ..today it blows ..high winds 19 windchill factor ..someone is trying to ruin my shooting this weekend too.

Winter in Wisconsin is a pain from time to time, but I'll still take it over 100+ degree weather in the summer down south, sure I COULD go out and shoot everyday, but I sure as heck don't want too when its that hot (heck, over 90 is too hot for me most days).

Hi Moto-Dan...

Hey Dude! Supposed to be "new and improved" here in Central BuckeyeLand tomorrow - just a wee dram chilly. Winds are supposed to be less than 10mph so I'm sure that .457 ball won't blow back and knock your hat off. :D

Oh stop complaining you lot! Weather here is fine for shooting but I can't go cos I have Bronchitis :fire: That's 2 weeks now without pulling a trigger

I worked in a prison in the north of the state, about 40 miles down the highway, there was a little village (too small to call a town, had a pub and there was a counter down the side on the verandah (porch) which had a little counter, sold milk, bread, eggs, groceries).

It was called Wingen. There was a vineyard which produced a reasonable drop of wine. The name of the vineyard was the 'Wingen Whine Company.' :D

Dan, I feel yer pain brutha. A couple days ago was the only day I could get free early enough to get some shooting time in during our shorter days (thank you daylight savings time that does neither!). The one day I could go turned out to be rain, snow and blowing wind. Down here in the south! West Texas type south where we don't really get much "winter". Ahh well, shoot twice as much next time you go, to make up for it. :)

Don't go whinin' bout the snow! Adapt! Get out the snowshoes ,get a hound and chase the bunnies! Ya wanna see what I put up with..search keweenaw and look at our winters...

I don't mind the snow really. It's the wet and windy stuff that bothers me. I guess I should get used to the snow, I'm moving to Colorado in the near future.

Plink, we have plenty of the white stuff to go around, so we'll be looking forward to having a gent such as yourself here, and welcome to Colorado!

Went shoot'n anywayz

Saturday was good enough to push some lead downrange.
My new to me Ruger old army shot exceptionally well. 25 yards and tight groups. A little high with the rear sight cranked all way down. Best group well within acceptable accuracy, with a 6:00 hold on 50ft (B-2) target (set out to about 75ft) I put two small cloverleaf patterns just outside the black at 1:00 position. Shot several similar groups. All high and slightly right. Managed only about 4 cylinder full then had to get some work done.

The ruger seemed to have a problem actually snapping the caps. Several times I had to hit it more than once to get it to pop.

Couple things I think are wrong. I think the nipples might be slightly mushroomed that prevents the cap from seating properly. Second, there is something dragging on the hammer in the last part of the ark as it falls. I thought is may be part of a cap stuck in the action. Couldn't find anything. During cleaning found nothing wrong with the inside but still it drags in the last part of the fall. Can't tell exactly where it is hanging up but it is.

Anyone have a similar problem with a ruger?

Shot my 1860 .44 on Sunday. It has some other problems. First it reqired another size ball. It shoots a .454 rather than .451 Grrrr. That makes way too many sizes in the house.
Now I keep round balls in size, .375, .380, .440, .451, .454, .457, .490, .530
There is something wrong with this.
The 1860 has seriously mushroomed nipples (and the log cabin shop was out of nipple sets)
Thinking about getting a nut threaded 6 x.75 and put that in a drill. screw in the nipple and then spin it. Using a stone and or file, bring the nipple back to slightly tapered.
Anyone attempted this?

Gettin' rid of mushrooms

Yessir, file away and get them nipples fixed.

Probably lose some surface hardness but they'll work better so who cares ?

Some folks chuck 'em in a drill for a "poor man's lathe" effect to sand/stone/file 'em. I myself recommend a set of hard stainless cones from Thunder Ridge Muzzloading or Big Irons. Fit #11 Remington caps perfectly.
Treso makes some exotic alloy nipples which fit #10 caps. Lotta people swear by 'em. Save your old ones for spares. I keep mine in a empty cap tin.

Cheers,

Cincinnati Slim

Living north of Ohio

Dan, my man! Why, indeed!

Because, kind sir, it isn't Ohio.

When it turns to winter here, it snows, and the snow stays on the ground instead of turning to slush. It stays in the trees and makes it a winter wonderland. You get out on skis and use a completely new and different set of hunting skills, not to mention the forest has a new, fresh look and sound. What a fine, new world it is. Even the Hawken and Dragoon bark louder and stronger in celebration.

Come on up and learn why Michigan traded the Upper Peninsula for Toledo. No number of national championships will ever make up for that.

Well thank you, J.T. I still have a bit of work to do before I can move. I need to build a house. I have the land, so at least that's a start! hehe

The way the land is laid out, I have a nice high mesa as a backstop and about 7-800 yards of shooting range up to it. I can hardly wait!

Gee,
We had 18 inches in my driveway on Friday last. Took 4 hours to clear the big driveway. Saturday, went out and walk through field of knee deep or better snow, phesant hunting. Our hunting party (3 plus dog) came away with 9 birds in 1.5 hours. Some of the best hunting around. The birds could not run and had to fly to get away. Was out prior to the snow, and they just ran and very few flew. In fact a few we had to kick out of the cover to take wing.... Standing corn was the best cover with deep snow knee high or better....

So, you say you can't shoot in cold weather?????

Shawnee...

Actually you can have both Cabela's. I get their catalogs but have pretty much stopped trading with them. Great selection in the catalog but you have to watch prices closely; most of the time I get better prices elsewhere. As for the stores themselves, well, the one in Dundee seems to have trouble keeping stock on the shelves; they are often (not always, but it seems like it's too often) out of what I want.

I either go to Jay's in Gaylord or Clare or Frank's in Linwood if the local gun shop doesn't have it or can't get it. One thing the local shop does have is a pot bellied stove, and old coffee pot and some of the best liars in the world...

Missing the snow!

I was doing fine this morning, untill I looked at the pic from Colorado. and all the talk of snow. We are a funnysort those who have it don't want it and those who want it can't get to it. :(
My wife and I were talking about the midwest last night. I told her when we can get back to the Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, area and I can sit on my back porch having my coffee in the morning, looking out on some horses and my rifle leaning against the rail waiting for that Bull or Cow (elk) to show up. I will know then the lord is happy with me again:D

So all of you mid westerners feel free to post those great pics and thanks!!
