Might be time for some gas checks

On my .44 mag loads. Using 240gr Meister hard cast and 21.0gr of AA-9 along with WLP primers. Velocity out of the SRH is 1550. Reason I'm thinking of going to gas checks is not so much the leading in the barrel but the splattering of lead on the outside of the brass casing after firing.

Also noticing a few kernels of unburned powder in the barrel after firing. Is it time to go to a CCI mag primer and work my way up again or maybe a heavier crimp. Accuracy is very good at 50yds with this load.

I wouldn't use plain cast bullets at anything much over 1000fps.

If I wanted that kind of velocity, I'd go with jacketed bullets.

Lenny, if it works and shoots good leave it alone. The only downside is a little clean up.

Me either, thats why I went with Meister hard cast bullets.

AA-9 powder is a relatively slow powder and magnum primers might help with ignition. A firmer crimp will also help with burning. I use a lot of AA-9 in 357 Sig and 10mm, and I think you'll get some unburned powder with it, no matter what, but it can be reduced with the firmer crimp. It certainly won't hurt.

Lenny--A +1 on HS's remark. Also I have never seen a barrel with out a few flecks of powder granuals when using the slow burners (h110,296,AA9, 2400,4227 etc) in magnum loads. If it groups good at 1550 and thats what you want why argue with success? Nick
