might get P95

so I might get a stainless P95 once my 30day one-gun expired. local dealer has the P95 blued for $300 while the stainless is $339. from people's opinion, the good outweighs the bad by big margin. suggestions on accessories?

I use snap caps for my HK 45 USP, does the P95 needs one too?
Would be interesting to see if anyone could post when you got it, and what's the first 3digit of the serial.
 
When I got my P90 I called Ruger and asked about dry fire and dropping the slide on an empty chamber, both things are frowned upon by some members of this and other boards.

Their response was to dry fire to my hearts content and not worry about dropping the slide on an empty chamber.

Give them a call and ask.

The snap caps are useful for having someone load into a mag to diagnose any problems you may have developed.

I can't say I am very partial to Ruger autos, their revovlers are good, but Ruger is one of the more anti second amendment rights companies out there. Bill Ruger supported the brady bill. and his company (after his death) have said that even if it sunsets Ruger will not make mags of more than 10 rounds.
That alone is enough to make me steer clear of them.
 
well, the company's political view doesn't really matter in my purchase. i rarely boycott anything, i buy what's good.
even though germany's not really on our side, i just got my HK 45 less than two weeks ago. solid weapon. i try to buy american now.

how's the trigger on the P95? still contemplating if I should get the manual safety or the decocker version. the trigger on the HK is very heavy on DA, but i really like the control lever :D safety and decocker in one. the P95 seems to have decocker and safety as well but not like the HK. (HK-> decock it, but in fire mode, P95-> decock it, goes to safety's on)

both seems to be able to handle +p or so ammo. i'd like the stainless, i think it's kind of cool.
 
Howdy. I think if you do a search here using "P95" or something similar as a search term, you'll find many, many threads about this particular pistol.

I am aware that there are folks out there like Faustulus who don't like (Ruger, S&W, fill in the blank...) for a variety of reasons. I'm not here to argue gun politics-I save that for other forums, but I'm not judging those who choose to discuss that here. My recollection is that Bill Ruger has been widely misquoted and misrepresented about the 10-round magazine issue, but I stand to be corrected, I'm sure.

There are many Ruger pistol owners here. I own both a P95 decocker and a P97 decocker. They are both excellent pistols. The P95 has had hundreds and hundreds of rounds through it and I've owned it about three or four years now. It simply does not choke on any 9mm ammo I've ever put through it. It feeds JHPs of various weights and configurations with complete reliability and is reasonably accurate with all of them. The DA trigger is fairly light and quite smooth and gets better the more you shoot the gun. The gun does not need gunsmithing as it comes out of the box. It just needs to be shot.

Your question was simply what the opinions are of the Ruger P95, either in decock or decock-safety configuration. I'd try to shoot one before buying, because they're not for everyone-the grip is a little wide, being configured for double-stack mags, and the trigger reach is therefore a little long for some folks. For me, it's perfect.

With regard to decock or decock-safety, that is strictly a matter of personal preference. The bottom line is whenever you shoot a DA/SA semi-auto pistol, particularly in a defensive situation, you must remember to decock the weapon so you're not holding a gun sitting in SA mode with a light trigger pull. Either decock configuration is satisfactory. My personal preference is for the decock-only configuration, but again, that's a matter of personal preference.

I highly recommend the Ruger centerfire autos. I think they're great and Ruger makes a quality product.

One more vote for the Ruger P95. I have a SS decocker version that has approx.1300 rounds through it without a bobble. The DA trigger is not bad, not a SIG, but better than a Beretta 92. The SA has a little creep, both SA and DA pulls have improved over time. Like any other handgun the way the gun feels is an individual thing, The Ruger feels better to me than a Beretta 92, but not as good as a SIG 228 or a FN HP.
 
thanks for the suggestion guys. i can't find any information on the force for the trigger pull in the DAO version.
 
I've had my P95 DC for almost a year.
I've got almost 1000rds through it.
I really like this gun.
(That is an excellent price on a stainless, by the way!)
The single action is very light and smooth, and the DA pull is getting better.
It is a very accurate gun, and is not ammo picky at all.

When I first got the gun, the grip felt too big for me.
I was determined to learn to use it though.
Now the grip feels just fine.
 
I had a SS one until I sold it a few weeks ago at agunshow for $250. You can pick them up cheap if you are not in CA.... oh nevermind. I paid about $210 for mine with 3 SS 10 round mags. It is one good gun, I just didn't need another 9mm full size and it was not accurate enough for me. I would trust my life to one because they are extremly reliable and robust.
 
Guess what?? Yep ... suits me! I also have the P95DC ..... and have been well pleased. It is an ugly gun IMO but that is academic ..... it feels good, if a tad ''chunky';' but that in fact helps for me with a fast grip aquisition on the draw .. very positive feel.

It shoots well enough ..... and over time with practice I have gotten used to the D/A release. No idea on poundage but ... does take quite a pull to achieve ..... smooth enough tho. By comparison (predictably I guess) ...... the S/A travel is pretty short and fairly light. Not as nice a feel as an HP in that respect but easily adapted to.

My SN is 313 - xxxxx ...... bought the piece as new/used ...... in fact I doubt it had had much use at all. Did pay a moderately high price for it but ...... still well pleased. Added a coupla after market mags (forget make, they are in truck!) ..... but apart from some very minor tweaks to these, they are fine.

I intend to get a P97 in near future ..... as I like the feel so much ... and this has exact same outa profile as P95 so will suit the Fobus paddle I use currently.

I am ''disappointed'' with certain ''political'' aspects behind Ruger but cannot let that deter me from aquisition of a piece i like. It is, like most Rugers, built like a brick latrine!!:)

as far as the bulkiness, it doesn't really matter, i prefer bigger guns than compact ones since it's easier for me to hold larger ones. i tried to hold glock 19, didn't feel right. in fact, my HK USP is quite big, but it feels good when i hold it, well balance and the gun is like an extension to my arm. no weird angle, and all controls are reacheable. this is most important to me.

i heard the stainless is like a pewter color instead of very shiny stainless steel.
 
Just to throw in, you might cast around for a new or used P94 or P93. I think the alloy framed Rugers are a little bit nicer engineered and have had virtually no problems reported (while the 95 has had sporadic take down lever gripes). But the P95 does seem to be a very good weapon.

As to the safety situation, I would recommend the decock only. Unless you forsee a situation that calls for a safety, a decocked DA auto is pretty darn safe already. The safety could prove a liability when you have to shoot and forget you had engaged it (KISS).

Yep ... sorta Gudel. It is pretty much a ''brushed'' or ''sandblasted'' appearance .... good really cos not over reflective.

A newer member (Firestorm I think) posted a pic of his P89 .. actually a much nicer lookin piece .. but I've never used one. They are around I'd imagine on the pre-owned market.

The ''feel'' of any gun is a very personal thing ... and so I have little doubt that many might really dislike the P series ... but if you like it .... you like it!!:)
 
During the Ruger rebate campaign on P pistols, I got a stainless 95 for $270 plus the usual extra charges. This was one of the best deals in the firearms. 27 oz empty, totally reliable, quite accurate once you get the sights adjusted, light, very soft recoil, 15 and 17 round mags readily available. Yes it is thick and ugly but a very good utilitarian 9MM. A really fine first pistol for anyone.

My first Ruger P95 (stainless) came to $251 which included the Brady check. Sold it when hit with a bad (really good) case of CZ-itis. Bought my second one and ended up paying around $279 after the rebate. Won't sell this one: it's more accurate than the first...by quite a bit. Ranks right up there with my CZs.

As mentioned, a overall good purchase.

just got back from a gun store.
It fits great in my hand. trigger seems pretty light, so might just get the decocker model only, since the safety is kind of awkward.

they're selling the KP95 (manual safety) for $419. :what:
I think i'll go to the other gun store where they sell it for $339, much closer to reality. what's with the plastic frame? lots of marks on it for a brand new in box unit :D but since it's affordable, i wouldnt complain abot it.

Gudel, there shouldn't be any marks on the gun whatsoever. My $339 KP95DAO came out of the box perfect. No marks on the frame whatsoever. No tool marks on the slide, inside or out. If they're trying to sell you one that is imperfect then it should come with a good discount or look elsewhere, there's lots of them out there.
