Migration to gun-friendly states?

I've been trying to work out this exact situation. I hope you don't mind if I hijack your thread instead of starting a near identical one. In my case, I'm not big into hunting, fishing, atv's, etc. I do love hiking and trail running though. I currently live in Brooklyn (yeah, I know). I love Brooklyn, in the sense that I love the atmosphere. I love the people and the night life and the environment.

What I HATE is the taxes and the politics. So if anyone can suggest a a city or an area right outside of a city like Brooklyn, without all of the problems of NY, I would be quite grateful.

Currently I live in Ohio and I am moving SOON (when the time is right) to a state that is not only "gun friendly" but "tax friendly." I figure I will be able to enjoy my God given rights and my hobby.

With the money I save in taxes I will be able to employ another 50 people at a good wage and give them great health care. If the government forces a national health care program on me, I will have to lay off people and shop for parts in countries other than the USA. That's called REALITY....

Consider Colorado!

Skiing, hunting, shooting, open carry, shall issue, etc.

Colorado is in dire need of more red staters. We're slipping into the blue far too quickly.

Just a thought.

There are many things in Idaho that are wrong. Please don't get the idea you should move here. Hot summers and cold winters and you could get lost and not find your way home. Rattlesnakes, wolves, and bears. Many bad things to contend with in Idaho. I wouldn't recomend it. Always wanted to move away but didn't work out. Just my two cents.

I did not enjoy UMass Lowell mainly because of the extremely liberal professors. They spend half the class time pushing their socialist agendas onto the ignorant children there. Most of those kids just got away from their parents and are figuring out how to live. The socialist professors prey upon this innocence to further their mislead cause. College is a joke. I don't know why you need a degree anyway. Half the stuff I was taught I never use or remember it.

It is my duty as a life long Idaho resident to advise the unknowing to not be interested in this state. The summers are hot and the winters are extremely miserable. The rattlesnakes and brown recluse are terrible and we are extremely vulnerable to the flu. We can pee off our back porch and howl to the moon without the neighbor calling 911 but that might change with the Obama regime. So, stay where you are and be happy with what you got and where you are cause it is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Just thought you would like to know!!

Keep talking like that, Elbert, and I'll have my Connecticut ass out there next week...with a bunch of friends. ;)

That said, I've lived in Idaho Falls, which is not the nicest area of Idaho, but I still loved it. Did the Navy Nuclear Power Prototype thing out at the INEL facility in the Arco desert.

My wife and I will be fleeing WI next spring. It looks like Alabama is going to be our next home. From what I can tell it's a gun-friendly state.

Gun laws were definitely a factor in our decision to leave WI.

In Utah we welcome people who want to be more free. We DON'T welcome people fleeing repressive state who move here to escape the crime and then start trying to implement their laws that got them into trouble in the first place.

A good friend of mine recently retired from the city administration and engineering office of a small Utah town. He's conservative, stubborn, and outspoken, with extensive education. He was encouraged to run for office, and at a town-hall debate, a transplant opponent (from KA) said he would like to limit local growth. He replied; "Funny, that's exactly what I said before YOU moved here." He got lots of cheers, but not a lot of votes. He's probably going to move where he can have his spread, his animals, his house, his cars, and all of his stuff the way he likes it without anyone telling him how to live.

I can't cite any kind of actual studies, but I have heard people from across the country say that they will send their kids to school here because we allow CCW on campus.

In Utah we welcome people who want to be more free

Amen to that! That is *exactly* why I would move there. I am the third generation in my family to have served in the military protecting our liberties and I will *NOT* give up these hard-earned rights simply because some liberal, do-gooder state thinks that our constitutional rights are "optional".

(...stepping down from soapbox now...) ;)

VT was its own country before being talked into joining the Union. Or so says the Second Vermont Republic... who want so secede and go back to being a self supported country (thats the gist I get).

That means VT doesn't really like all these damn regulations other states, and the Fed govt keep trying to push down their/our throats. Im not sure if I can include myself... yet... as a Vermonter. I was a flatlander most of my life. I migrated from NY to VT for only a short list of reasons.

1. NY sucks, as shown by the above reports.
2. You actually still have rights in VT. (see: NY sucks)
3. I already had a job lined up for me when I moved.

You'll find stupid hippies here, who are totally against guns. Stupid hippies who are curious about guns, who you'll later find out would probably use them to assault humanity for destroying nature, and well rounded people who have come to accept/embrace the rights and privileges of gun ownership.

I lived here for about a year before finally getting around to tossing my NY drivers license, and I did it the minute I had a few hundred bucks kicking around to FINALLY go buy myself a handgun.

I went to a fish/game shop that was also a gas station and the first thing laid into my hands was a Ruger P345, which felt great in my hand, and was in my budget. I put a down payment on it. The next day I went to the DMV, applied/received my drivers license, and then drove straight to the gun/gas station and finished paying for my gun, walking out with it the same afternoon.

THATS how its supposed to happen.

If you end up choosing VT, shoot me a PM if you're up around the Burlington area. We can hit up the range sometime. Maybe my friend with the 100 round drum for his AK will come out. Wear a shirt when you shoot that, or you'll end up with a bruise outline like a screw head on your shoulder from the buttstock. I'll have to post a pic of that....

Thanks, Achttung! I was in Burlington and Woodstock (VT) last September with the family and we loved it. The weather was perfect, the scenery was stunning, and the people were very friendly. We will definitely be back there and I will send you a PM when I do. The AK sounds like a blast (do post some photos, too).

My wife wants to move to South Dakota when we retire. Almost as gun friendly as Alaska, but it does seem to have this onerous requirement that handguns can't be picked up until after a 48 hour waiting period. What's up with that?!

I am now seriously contemplating moving the family to Utah or Vermont to live in a gun-permissive society.

This bothers me. You may be more thoughtful than this sentence suggests, so please don't take me too seriously.

It's just that there are different ways to enjoy guns, and you must like some better than others. A hunter might choose a state based on the game available. A target shooter might want to get closer to the sites of big matches, or where it was easy (possible?) to find a 1000yd range. If you want to carry, you might be mostly interested in CCW law. A collector has other issues.

Noooooo! It's all lies, Utah is a terrible place to live! Stay away, please for the love of all that is good, stay away.

"Going Armed to the Terror of the People"

That sounds very similar to Georgia's "Public Gathering" clause. Of which nobody, not even the Attorney General of Georgia, can tell you what constitutes a "Public Gathering".

Eye-5600 -- By "gun-permissive", I mean a state that does not trample Second Amendment rights. The word permissive is a bit tongue-in-cheek because this is a right, not a privilege, but government regulations being what they are, this is as close as it will get. Please see my other posts in this same thread.

Iowa is good but it is up to the county you live in for CCW...a can issue. No silencers, SBR nor machine guns 3 day wait with unlimited buys from when you get a yearly permit. Good gun stores are few and far inbetween.

Camping at Lucky Peak is an hour away just northeast of Boise, or for those that want a more "rural" trip Warm Lake is about 4 hours from Boise (east of Cascade in the Boise National Forest and the Frank Church Wilderness Area).

Warm lake is 2 hours from Boise. Maybe if your wife/girl friend rides with you and has to pee at every gas station, it will take 4hrs. Deadwood reservoir is on the border of the Frank Church and its 2.5-3 hour depending on how much you obey the speed limit.

I should add that in Idaho, its legal to carry a concealed weapon(firearm, dirk, knife, shank) w/out a liscense as long as the person is outside city limits and engaging in a legal activity(i.e. fidhing, camping, hunting, riding dirt bikes or ATV's, etc). And by definition of State law, long guns (rifles/shotguns) "cant physically be concealed".

I certainly hope no evil troll talks you into even CONSIDERING moving to Wyoming. Trust me, it is a very hard and unrewarding life here. There are only two seasons of the year, winter and road construction. Summer seldom lasts more than the 4th of July and maybe part of the morning of the 5th, then the snowballs start flying again. You must be competant in surviving temperatures of at least -30F and 40K winds, which blow constantly without reprise. There are few jobs outside of working with a bunch of uneducated redneck roughnecks on some godforsaken oil rig in the middle of nowhere. The natives are all rabid gun-brandishing right wing extremists, always flying a flag in front of their homes and VOTING. You absolutety MUST HAVE a heavy duty 4WD vehicle and if your wife wants to go shopping while you are working you better have two. The fishing and hunting really sucks as the wolves and grizzlies have eaten all the game animals and are starting on the humans. You will likely live more than 150 miles from a mall, 25 miles at least from a wallyworld and 40 miles from cell phone reception. There are 3 kinds of radio stations: country, country and country.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Better you should go to Idaho or Montana. :D
