I have a Ruger Mini 14 223 Ranch - I would like to put a new Shilen HB on it. Every gunsmith I email - says No Thanks - whats up with that?

Is there a problem with the barrel or the rifle?

Thanks and suggestions?

:banghead:

If the outside diameter of the new barrel is greater than that of the original barrel (which is sort of the point of a heavy barrel), then you will need a new/modified gas block assembly and a new front sight assembly. I have read that replacing the front sight assembly on a mini is a royal pain in the posterior.

Your best bet will almost certainly be one of the nationally known shops that works on mini's, like Accuracy Systems. They have a very good reputation.

You might also ask around on the Mini-14 Forum at Perfect Union, and they'll be able to steer you in the right direction.

You might want to try a strut before you rebarrel it... run a search for "strut" and homemade and accu-strut and har-bar at perfectunion.

Thanks

Well I see what you say about the accustrut deal. One problem - being a new bee I saw what I thought was a good deal at gunbroker.com - bought the Shilen barrel. It has a reduced thickness area for the gas port.

I dont need a front sight as I will use a scope and probably a recoild muzzle break.

Accuracy looks good but - some what embarrased to call them - they show the Shilen barrel as an example of what not to use:uhoh:

Now what?

Check out a Mo-Rod strut. I think they're nicest and he lists them on ebay. Struts do help a Mini 14.

Found them too. Any idea why CCG stopped selling there addon heavy barrel?

I have one of these "Clark harmonic dampers" for sale. It only fits the original style rifles with the ramp type front sight but it really works. I haven't listed it yet but if anyone is interested IM me.

For the money you will spend trying to make your Mini 14 shoot accurately, you could buy an AR which will, and for less money.
