Several years ago, my wife and I had occasion to be in Abakan, Siberia, Russia. While there awaiting the adoption of our son to be finalized, we had a little time on our hands and got to take in a local museum of natural history. One display was a woodland diorama with a couple of stuffed animals in it. One was a moose (man- they are big!) and then there was this little deer about the size of a german shepherd dog that had these little fangs sticking out of the upper jaw. I sure wished I would have taken a picture of it. I could not read the info about what we were looking at as we do not read Russian, and nobody else there spoke English. Has anyone seen an animal like this or know what it was we were looking at?

Yep, they do bark.

Originally they were held in private collections, but between escapes and probable deliberate releases they are now established in some areas of the UK.

From what I remember reading about them they are a bit odd. Considered 'primitive' due to the 'tusks' that are enlarged canines, they are capable of breeding all year round, in fact capable of conceiving just days after giving birth, and are solitary or live in pairs.

I've had the misfortune of being attacked by a "Werewolf Deer". One of the most frightening experience I've ever had hunting. Sun hadn't quite come up as I was trying to get in my treestand...heard growling and saw a pair of glowing red eyes coming right for me. It grabbed my leg, lost my balance, and fell to the ground. Grabbed my hunting knife (silver colored & somewhat shaped like a crucifix) buried it into the snarling beasts heart....he then slumped into a lifeless heap. I was covered in blood and all my new camo clothing was ripped to shreds. The meat had a bitter taste...threw it away, but did manage to get the head mounted. (That's my story...and I'm sticking to it!)
