Can anyone tell me why I have far worse smoke w/ MBC #1 Ranger (158 gr .357) than with nearly any of my other .357mag cowboy loads. I've never created quite as big a cloud using Unique with other bullet selections: Xtreme, Silver State, etc. Do any of you think the MBC slugs have a smokier wax lube? As always, thanks in advance!

The lube of most any conventional lubed lead bullet is going to smoke, Some of the smoke also comes from powder when used at a low charge. Especially powder like Unique or even HP 38. At low charges it is smoky/dirty.

Odds are its the lube. One thing you might check is actual diameter of the bullets and bore diameter. Obviously you want the bullet 1-3 thousandths over. MBC's are an 18 brinel hardness (fairly hard alloy) WW is around 10-12. You may also not be getting good obturation of the base of the bullet. Try giving them a slightly tighter crimp. I had problems with their #1 Buffalo and Smashers in my 45-70 and 44mag. A tighter crimp solved my problem.

Colt,
Great idea..... However they didn't offer coated bullets when I bought mine. The OP may be in the same boat.

Think I'll relegate these to outdoors only shooting and get something cleaner for indoor ranges. The dark gray snot I had from sucking down soot was disconcerting. Tasted like freedom, though.

You are still sucking in lead at indoor ranges, the smoke from bullet lube is the least of you problems, Lead dust is everywhere in the indoor range mostly from primers not bullets. Wash up very well after shooting.

Most ranges here (indoor) are lead free.

Try Acme Hi-Tek coated bullets. Much cleaner to handle than lubed lead bullets and no smoke.

Or, if you can get unlubed lead bullets, powdercoat yourself. It's quite easy and surprisingly quick. No smoke, no leading, pretty colors.:p
